XG:Okay, let’s pick up where we left off on Monday. We were gonna talk about body piercings today, right?

JJ:Yeah, the history of piercing also comes from many different cultures and historical backgrounds. Let’s start with nose piercings, they were first discovered 4,000 years ago in the Middle East.

XG:And tongue piercing was first practiced as part of rituals in ancient tribes, such as the Aztecs and Mayas. They did this to draw blood to prepare them for the gods.

JJ:Ear lobe piercing isthe most common and oldest type of piercings. Guess what? It was found on the Iceman that had the tattoos! He had pierced ears that had been stretched seven to eleven millimeters wide.

XG:Wow! That Iceman is quite a rebel! Later on, tribes believed that demons could enter your body through the ears, so they thought that the metal in the piercing would protect them.
小高：哇！那個冰人確實有些叛逆哦！再后來呢，部落的人們相信惡魔會通過耳朵進入你的身體，所以他們認為耳洞上的金屬會起到保護作用。
JJ:Surprisingly, there’s a kindof piercing that doesn’t stretch back to ancient times:bellybutton piercing. It has just recently become common. More females than males get their bellybuttons pierced.
京晶：讓我吃驚的是，到時有一種人體穿刺不需要追溯到遠古時代哦，那就是穿臍環。這是現代才流行起來的，女性比男性更愛穿臍環。
XG:Did you know that Roman soldiers and warriors used to pierce their nipples for two reasons? One was to showstrength, courage, and bravery. The second reason was to hang their capes off of their leather breastplates while in battle.
小高：那你知道羅馬的戰士和武士們也會在自己的乳頭上穿上環，有兩個理由：一是表現他們身為戰士的力量，勇氣，和膽量，二是在戰爭中在他們的皮鎧甲上用此環掛上披風。
JJ:That is painful just thinking about it! Well, as we can see, reasons for piercing the body vary among cultures and history. Nowadays, Americans get their body pierced mostly because they think it looks cool.
京晶：想想都疼呀！不過如我們所說，給人體穿孔的理由來自不同歷史文化。如今美國人給自己的身體打了各種洞主要是他們覺得看上去很酷。
XG:And some people get piercings because it makes them look dangerous. So there is also a rebellious aspect tobody piercing, too.
小高：還有一些人給身體弄很多洞只是因為這樣他們看上去顯得很危險，所以也有一些反抗世俗的因素在里面。
JJ:Anyways, that was interesting, let’s go get a tattoo and our tongue’s pierced.
京晶：好吧，挺有意思的，那我們這就去弄個紋身然后穿一個舌環吧！
XG:What?!
小高：這是什么鬼？
JJ:Just kidding! C’mon, let’s go eat.
