Wounds of War Soldiers Bring Home the Mental Scars of Combat

CNNANCHOR :As U.S. troops increasingly survive horrific injuries in combat, the number of those suffering from less-obvious mental wounds is also skyrocketing.

CNNANCHOR :A new study finds one in four U.S. war veterans, one in four who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, now suffer from some mental disorder. Senior Pentagon correspondent jaime Mclntyre reports.

JAIME MCTNTYRE, CNN CORRESPONDENT:Calling the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the most sustained combat operation since Vietnam, the study concludes the conflicts have produced an epidemic of mental illness-the kind that can sometimes kill.

According to a review of more than 100,000 veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan who were seen at VA hospitals between 2001 and 2005, it's taking a heavy toll. One quarter, 25 percent, have been diagnosed with some form of mental disorder. Include psychosocial problems such as domestic violence, and the percentage jumps to almost one third. Not surprisingly, younger troops, 18-to 24-year-olds, who often draw the deadliest front line duty, are the most at risk.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is the biggest problem, diagnosed in 13 percent of returning veterans, followed by anxiety, problems adjusting, depression, and substance abuse. More than half of the 100,000 suffered two or more problems.
