In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains.

樹葉給微風吹得往下紛紛掉墜，士兵們開過之后，路上白晃晃，空空蕩蕩，只剩下一片落葉。
The plain was rich with crops;
平原上有豐饒的莊稼；
there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare.
有許許多多的果樹園，而平原外的山巒，則是一片光禿禿的褐色。
There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery.
山峰間正在打仗，夜里我們看得見戰炮的閃光。
