Three competing store owners rented adjoining shops in a mall. Observers waited for mayhem to ensue.

2.waited for mayhem to ensue
wait for表示等待，重點看到后面的mayhem to ensue。
mayhem表示蓄意破壞，而ensue表示繼而發生。由文章得知三家互搶生意的店子租用了毗鄰的店鋪。
所以mayhem to ensue表面意思解釋為蓄意破壞的接連發生，結合文本譯為好戲的發生。
