半個還是十分之五 Half or Five Tenths

Teacher: Would you rather have one half of an orange or five tenths?
老師：你愿意要半個柑橘，還是十分之五個柑橘?
Gerald: I'd much rather have the half.
杰拉得：我寧可要半個。
Teacher: Think carefully, and tell me why.
老師：仔細想想，說出理由來。
Gerald: Because you lose too much juice when you cut the orange into five tenths.
杰拉得：因為你如果把柑橘切成十分之五，那柑橘汁就損失太多了。

1.half
half的用法與all和both相同,既可用作形容詞（或稱限定詞）修飾名詞,如 half the year, half the work, half the fruit，亦可用作不定代詞,受of短語修飾,如：half of the work, half of the year, half of the fruit。這兩種表達形式在意義上沒有明顯的區別。
例如：Half (of) the girls are foreigners. 這些姑娘有一半是外國人。

half +名詞或half of+名詞作主語時,謂語動詞的單、復數形式由所接名詞的單復數形式來決定,名詞是中心詞
eg:Half (of) the fruit was bad. 水果有一半是壞的。
Half(of) my friends live in this city. 我的朋友有一半住在這個城市。

2.much rather
much rather 是有點反面的講，“我更寧愿”
eg:I'd much rather watching The Voice of US.
much prefer 是正面，“我喜歡”

3.five tenths
five tenths是十分之五的意思。
分數的表達方式用“基數詞＋序數詞”表示。其中基數詞表示分子，序數詞表示分母。
要注意如果分子大于1，分母要用復數形式。
比如：two thirds，三分之二。而三分之一則用one third.
