Just A Little Smile
只因一個(gè)微笑
Mike was walking home from school one day when he noticed a boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a tape recorder. Mike knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles. Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden.
一天，邁克從學(xué)校回家的時(shí)候，發(fā)現(xiàn)前面有個(gè)男孩絆了一下，男孩手里的書全都散落在地上。還有兩件毛衣，一個(gè)棒球棒，一只手套和一個(gè)磁帶錄音機(jī)。邁克跪下來，幫男孩拾起散落的物件。因?yàn)樗麄円ネ粋€(gè)地方，他幫男孩拿了一些東西。
As they walked, Mike discovered the boy's name was James, that he loved video games, baseball and history, and that he was having lots of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend.
他們邊走邊聊，邁克知道眼前這個(gè)男孩叫詹姆斯，喜歡視頻游戲，棒球和歷史；除了歷史，他的其他功課都不是太好；還有他剛跟女友分手。
They arrived at James' home first, and Mike was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mike went home.
他們先到達(dá)的是詹姆斯的家，男孩邀請(qǐng)邁克進(jìn)屋喝杯可樂，看會(huì)電視。他們?cè)谝黄鹞亓奶欤挛缇驮谟淇斓姆諊卸冗^了，然后邁克回家了。
They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years.
他們后來還有一兩次約在學(xué)校附近見面，聊天，開心地笑，然后同時(shí)初中畢業(yè)了。再后來，他們上了同一所高中，依舊好幾年都保持頻繁的聯(lián)系。
Finally the long awaited senior year came and three weeks before graduation, James asked Mike if they coud talk.
最終期待已久的高中生活開始，畢業(yè)前三個(gè)星期，詹姆斯問邁克他們能否一起說會(huì)話。
James reminded him of the day years ago when they first met. "Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things?" asked James. "You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. I stored away some of my mother's sleeping pills. I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others might follow. So you see, Mike, when you picked up those booksthat day, you did a lot more for me. You saved my life."
詹姆斯回想起我們第一次見面的場(chǎng)景。“你從未想知道為什么那天我會(huì)拿那么多東西嗎？”詹姆斯問。“你知道，我清理了柜子因?yàn)槲也幌胱屍渌擞玫臅r(shí)候看到柜子里一團(tuán)糟。我儲(chǔ)藏了一些我媽媽的安眠藥。我當(dāng)時(shí)正準(zhǔn)備回家自殺。但是當(dāng)我們?cè)谝黄鹉敲撮_心地交談，我意識(shí)到如果我自殺了，將會(huì)錯(cuò)過那段以及可能隨之而來的許多美好時(shí)光。所以邁克，你知道了吧，那天回家路上你做的不僅僅是幫我撿起散落在地上的書，對(duì)我來說那意味更多東西，是你救了我一命。”
