PART I - The Dialogues
這一講，先是Geoff Howard 一到足球場外，和排隊買票的人談話。因為一直在下雨，有的人身上顯淋淋的。
后面一部分，是一輛小汽車差一點兒撞了一個騎自行車的姑娘。
在澳大利亞，車輛一律靠左行駛。這輛小汽車沿馬路左側行駛，準備向右拐彎。這時對面開來一輛卡車。卡車過去以后，小汽車往右拐，差一點兒撞了跟在卡車后面的自行車。
Dialogue 1
CYCLIST:
Hey! Look out! You nearly hit me!
MOTORIST:
I'm awfully sorry. I didn't see you. Actually I was watching the big truck. I was just turning right when I saw you.
DIALOGUE 2
后來開小汽車的人回到家里，把差一點撞車的事告訴了妻子。
MOTORIST:
And as I was waiting, there was this truck, and it was coming the other way. I was watching the truck. But there was this cyclist...
WIFE:
Where was the cyclist?
MOTORIST:
She was coming up behind the truck while I was waiting for it.
WIFE:
But you didn't see her.
MOTORIST:
NO.I wasn't looking .I was watching the truck. Then the truck went past. And as I was turning right, suddenly there was this cyclist.

PART III - The Lesson
THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE過去進行時
過去進行時可用于以下各種情況：
1、表示過去某一時刻正在進行的動作。
At 8 o'clock last night I WAS watchING TV.
This time last year he WAS visitING his mother.
At 3 o'clock yesterday we WERE doING AN EXAM.

What were you doing + 以this time 引導的來表示過去的時間狀語。
What were you doing this time:
last year?/last night?/last month?/last week?/last Sunday?/yeaterday?
2、表示過去某件事突然發生時正在進行的動作。突然發生的事用簡單過去時。這樣兩個分句通常用when連接起來。
I was walking to work WHEN I met him.
Barbara was talking to John WHEN Wang arrived.

例如警察進行調查，他就可以這樣問：
What were you doing when you saw him?
What were you dong when the fire engine arrived?
3、表示過去同時進行的兩個動作。這樣兩個分句可以用while或as 連接起來。
I was watching TV WHILE she was chatting on the phone.
As I was waiting, a truck was coming the other way.
4、表示過去在一段時間內進行的動作。
Where were you working last year?
.I was working in Melbourne.
What was your brother doing yesterday morning?
.He was digging in the garden.
CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES
a)This 在英語口語里，特別是在生動地敘述一件事情的時候，在通常用a的地方不用a , 而用this.例如：
i)I was looking the other way, you know ,when this bus came past and whosh!
ii)I can't come .I've got this cold.
b)Hey [ ]用來引起某人的注意，相當于漢語里的“喂”。
c)Whoosh [ ]用來描寫水濺起來的聲音。
PRONUNCIATION CORNER
請注意，was 和were 在過去進行時里通常是不重讀的。例如：
What were you doing at five o'clock?
-I was waiting.
adj. 連續的，繼續的，連綿不斷的
