They were good on the whole.

We saw Harry and Frances.

Norm:

We haven't heard from then since they left here. How are they getting on these days?
KERRY:
Oh,they're doing very well.It's a lovely shop.
NORM:
That's good.
KERRY:
They've been there for five years now,you know.
NORM:
Five years. Well ,what do you know!

1.ASKING FOR NEWS 打聽(tīng)情況
a) Chris 和Kerry最近剛從昆士蘭州回來(lái)。Aunty doris 和Uncle Norm 想知道他們出去旅行的情況,所以他們就問(wèn):How was the trip?
要了解別人出去旅行的情況,還可以用這兩個(gè)問(wèn)句:
Where did you go?
How long were you away?
或
How long were you away for?
b)如果談到共同認(rèn)識(shí)的朋友,往往先這樣問(wèn):
How's Peter getting on these days?
回答這個(gè)問(wèn)題時(shí),可以用這兩個(gè)說(shuō)法:
(i)He's fine. (談Peter身體怎樣)
(ii)Very well.
He's got a bookshop now.
(談Peter其他情況)
如果想多了解他的情況,可以接著問(wèn):
Where's Peter working?
How long has he been there?
What's his job?
2)EXCLAMATIONS 感嘆句
我們用下列類驚嘆句對(duì)所獲得的各種消息作出反應(yīng)。
Disappointing What a shame!
News What a pity!
令人失望的消息
Bad News How awful!真糟糕
不好的消息 I am sorry!
Good News That's good!
好消息 That's good news!
Surprising News What do you know!
令人驚訝的消息 Really!
有些感嘆句需要結(jié)合說(shuō)話的場(chǎng)合才能知道其含義。例如:
It's been raining for hours.
What a day !(意思是:What a wet/awful day!)
It's warm and sunny.
What a day! (意思是:What a beautifu day!)
She's very clever.
What a wife! (意思是:What a clever wife!)
She's wonderful.
What a wife(意思是:What a wonderful wife!)
不要忘記,在書(shū)寫(xiě)的時(shí)候,英語(yǔ)的感嘆句后面要用“!”這個(gè)標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)。
3.FAREWLLS告辭
告辭的時(shí)候,也有一些比較固定的說(shuō)法:
a)客人表示該走了
We must be leaving.
It's time we went.
It's time we were going.
b)主人客氣地表示時(shí)間還早
Oh,don't go yet.
Stay a bit longer.
c)客人感謝主人熱情招待
Thanks for your hospitality.
(非常正式)
It's been a lovely evening.
Thanks for having us.*
d)主人向客人表示他們能來(lái)作客使他感到高興
Clad you could come.
Nice to have you.
Come again.
* 客人在剛來(lái)的時(shí)候和告辭的時(shí)候都可以說(shuō)Thanks for inviting us. 但只有在告辭的時(shí)候才說(shuō)Thanks for having us.
a)以-ity結(jié)尾的詞,重音落在詞尾前面的那個(gè)音節(jié)上。
