Dead ducks found in Chinese river

Days after thousands of dead pigs were found in China, rotting ducks have been discovered in the south-west. More than 1,000 dead ducks have been pulled from a river in Sichuan province. Many were found dumped in bags. Officials insist the ducks pose no threat to livestock or humans. Local media say the river is not a source of drinking water for local residents. An investigation has been launched into why the ducks died. The discovery comes after thousands of dead pigs were found in a river near Shanghai, sparking public outrage. Traces of a virus were found in some of the pigs, raising fears that sick animals could end up in the food chain.

Opposition takes Syria's Arab summit seat

Opposition leaders took Syria's seat at an Arab League summit for the first time on Tuesday. The Syrian National Coalition occupied the seat after the emir of Qatar, host of the summit, formally invited them to represent Syria. Moaz Alkhatib, a Sunni Muslim cleric, took over the vacant chair despite announcing on Sunday that he would step down as leader of the coalition.

SYRIAN OPPOSITION LEADER, MOAZ ALKHATIB, SAYING: (PARTLY COVERED) "The Syrian regime is the one who refuses any solution to the crisis, we welcome any political solution that can protect people's lives and avoids more destruction." The Arab League suspended Syria in November 2011 to protest its use of violence against civilians to quell dissent. The United Nations says about 70,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which has now entered its third year.

PYONGYANG RESIDENT, SO CHOL GYUN, SAYING: "My heart is burning with revengeful thought. Such provocation can no longer be allowed. I am ready to turn out in a great war of justice to reduce the U.S. mainland to ashes."

At the White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed the threat.

WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JAY CARNEY SAYING: "As we say consistently the DPRK will achieve nothing by these threats and provocations which will further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in northeast Asia." Pyongyang's aggressive rhetoric appears to mark a further attempt to boost the military credentials of Kim Jong-un, who took power in December 2011 after the death of his father.
