Lesson 61 Archery In The Olden Time II.
第61課 古代箭術二
One by one the archers, stepping forward, delivered their shafts yeoman-like and bravely.
弓箭手們像農奴們一樣依次走上前，勇敢地射出了箭。
Of twenty-four arrows, shot in succession, ten were fixed in the target;
二十四支箭射了出去，共有十支箭射中了目標；
and the others ranged so near it, that, considering the distance of the mark, it was accounted good archery.
其他的箭距離目標很近，考慮到離目標的距離，都稱得上是好箭。
Of the ten shafts which hit the target, two, within the inner ring were shot by Hubert,
射中目標的十支箭里有兩支射中了靶心，這兩支箭是有休伯特射出的，
a forester in the service of Malvoisin; who was accordingly pronounced victorious.
他是馬爾瓦森的一名護林員。因此裁判宣布他就是射箭冠軍。
"Now, Locksley," said Prince John to the bold yeoman, with a bitter smile,
“你，洛克斯萊，”約翰王子對這位勇敢的奴仆苦笑著說道，
"wilt thou try conclusions with Hubert, or wilt thou yield up bow, baldric, and quiver to the provost of the sports?"

"Sith it be no better," said Locksley, "I am content to try my fortune, on condition that when I have shot two shafts at yonder mark of Hubert's,

he shall be bound to shoot one at that which I shall propose."

"That is but fair," answered Prince John, "and it shall not be refused thee.

If thou dost beat this braggart, Hubert, I will fill the bugle with silver pennies for thee."

"A man can do but his best," answered Hubert; "but my grandsire drew a good long-bow at Hastings, and I trust not to dishonour his memory."

The former target was now removed, and a fresh one of the same size placed in its room.

At length he made a step forward, and raising the bow at the full stretch of his left arm,

till the centre or grasping-place was nigh level with his face, he drew his bow-string to his ear.

The arrow whistled through the air, and lighted within the inner ring of the target, but not exactly in the centre.
