Where, man of woe! Where, wretched father! is thy boy? Thou call'st his name in vain: he can not answer thee.
那里，敵人！那里，沮喪的父親！是你的孩子嗎？你這么徒勞呼喚他的名字，他卻沒有回答你。
Loudly the father called upon his child: No voice replied. Trembling and anxiously, he searched their couch of straw;
父親大聲喊著他的孩子：沒有回答的聲響。在戰(zhàn)栗和焦急中，他尋到他們的草席；
with headlong haste trod round his stinted limits, and, low bent, groped darkling on the earth: no child was there.
他不顧一切踏在吝惜的界限上，彎著腰，在黑魆魆的地上摸索：沒有孩子。
Again he called: again, at farthest stretch of his accursed fetters,
他復又呼喚：這次，在被他詛咒的腳鐐遠端
till the blood seemed bursting from his ears, and from his eyes fire flashed,
鮮血似乎從他耳朵噴出，他的雙眸冒著火，
he strained with arm extended far, and fingers widely spread, greedy to touch though but his idol's garment. Useless toil!
他向遠端展開雙臂，手指也展得很寬，渴望夠到愛子的衣裳。徒勞的苦工！
Yet still renewed: still round and round he goes, and strains, and snatches, and with dreadful cries calls on his boy.
然而還在重新嘗試：他徘徊許久，拉緊，伸手攫住，伴著聲嘶力竭的呼喚兒子的聲音。
Mad frenzy fires him now. He plants against the wall his feet; his chain grasps;
現(xiàn)在狂亂已經(jīng)把他點燃。他飛腳踹墻；他的鎖鏈愈發(fā)扣緊；
tugs with giant strength to force away the deep-driven staple; yells and shrieks with rage:
用盡氣力猛拉那嵌得很深的釘子；狂怒的咆哮和尖叫聲響起：
And, like a desert lion in the snare, raging to break his toils, to and fro bounds.
就像一頭困在陷阱里的沙漠雄獅，憤怒地中斷他的勞苦，來回踱步。
