What the Spiders Did
蜘蛛做了什么
That night, when everything was quiet, the kind fairy sent for the spiders.
那天晚上，萬籟俱靜時，善良的仙女把蜘蛛送了過去。
So the spiders came creeping, creeping downstairs from the attic. They came creeping, creeping upstairs from the cellar.
于是，蜘蛛從閣樓上慢慢地、慢慢地爬下來。它們從地窖里慢慢地、慢慢地爬上樓來。
"Now you may go in," said the fairy.
“現在你們可以進去了，”仙女說。
They crawled along the floors and around the corners into the very room where the Christmas tree stood.
它們沿著地板和墻角爬進了圣誕樹所在的那個房間。
All the spiders were there, wise old father spiders, fat mother spiders, and tiny, tiny baby spiders.
所有的蜘蛛都到了，聰明的蜘蛛爸爸，胖胖的蜘蛛媽媽，還有小小的蜘蛛寶貝。
They crowded around the tree. And then they looked!
它們擠在樹周圍，然后看圣誕樹。
"What a beautiful sight!" they said.
“多么美麗的畫面啊！”它們說。
They crawled up the trees so that they could see everything on it. Then they crawled over all the branches, from the top to the bottom.
它們爬上樹，以便能看到上面的一切。然后它們從上到下爬過所有的樹枝。
Round and round, up and down, in and out among the branches they went.
它們在樹枝間從上到下、從里到外一圈圈地爬著。
The spiders crept over and over the dolls.
蜘蛛躡手躡腳地爬過布娃娃。
They crawled round and round the drum and in and out of the horn. They crept all over the jumping-jack from his red cap to his white toes.
它們不停地繞著鼓爬，在喇叭里進進出出。它們躡手躡腳地從“彈跳杰克”的紅色帽子爬到它的白色腳趾頭上
Back went the spiders to the cellar and the attic. But they went away happy, for they had seen the Christmas tree.
蜘蛛回到了地窖和閣樓。但是它們離開時很開心，因為它們看到了圣誕樹。
In the middle of the night the fairy came to the tree.
午夜時分，仙女來到了圣誕樹旁。
"I must see if the beautiful tree is all ready for Christmas morning." she said.
“我必須看看這棵美麗的樹是否已經準備好迎接圣誕節的早晨了。”她說。
But when she looked at it, what do you think? The tree was covered from top to bottom with webs! Everywhere a spider had crawled, it had left a web.
但是當她看到它時，你覺得會怎樣呢？這棵樹從上到下都被網覆蓋了！蜘蛛爬過的所有地方都留下了蜘蛛網。
There were webs around the silver star. They were on all the branches. They went around and around the pink ball and nearly hid the dolls in their bright dresses.
銀星周圍有蜘蛛網。所有樹枝有蜘蛛網。粉球周圍有一圈圈的蜘蛛網，甚至娃娃鮮艷的裙子里也藏著蜘蛛網。
What could the fairy do? "Now I see why the mother swept all the spiders away," she said. "It will never do to trim a Christmas tree with spider webs."
仙女能做什么？“現在我明白為什么母親把所有的蜘蛛都趕走了。”她說，“永遠不能用蜘蛛網來裝飾圣誕樹。”
So the fairy thought and thought. After a while she smiled happily and said, "I know just what to do."
于是，仙女想了又想。過了一會兒，她高興地笑道：“我知道該怎么做了。”
Then she touched every one of the webs and changed them all to gold.
然后她摸了所有的蜘蛛網，把它們都變成了金色。
"Oh, what beautiful trimmings!" cried the fairy.
“哦，多么美麗的裝飾啊！”仙女叫道。
The golden spider webs were shining like diamonds!
金色的蜘蛛網像鉆石一樣閃閃發光！
And that is why bright trimmings are still used on Christmas trees.
這就是圣誕樹仍然使用明亮裝飾品的原因。
