The Beautiful Tree
美麗的樹
It was the day before Christmas, and a beautiful Christmas tree stood in the middle of a large room.
圣誕節前一天，一棵美麗的圣誕樹立在一間大房子中央。
The tree was trimmed with nuts and candy and bright-colored candles. Its branches were full of toys, and on the very top a silver star was shining.
樹上裝飾著堅果、糖果和多彩的蠟燭。樹枝上滿是玩具，最上面有一顆銀星閃閃發光。
The doors of the room were shut.
房間的門被關上了。
"The children must not see the tree until morning."said their parents.
“孩子們必須到早晨才能看到圣誕樹。”他們的父母說。
But the big black cat had seen the Christmas tree with her great green eyes. The little gray kitten had seen it with her round blue eyes. The big house dog had seen it with his kind brown eyes. The yellow bird had seen it with his wise bright eyes.
但是大黑貓那雙綠色的大眼睛看到了它。小灰貓那圓圓的藍眼睛看見了它。大狗那和善的棕色眼睛看見了它。黃鳥那聰慧明亮的眼睛看見了它。
Even the wee mice from the attic had taken a peep when no one else was near.
甚至連閣樓上的小老鼠也在周圍沒人的時候偷看了一眼。
But the little gray spiders had not had even one peep at the Christmas tree.

You see, the spiders like to spin their webs in dark, warm corners. They had made webs in nearly all the dark corners of the house.

Just a few days before Christmas, the mother had cleaned the house. When she swept and dusted the dark corners, all the spiders had to run away.

Dear me, how the spiders had to run!

Some ran upstairs to the attic and hid in the dark corners there, and some ran downstairs to the cellar and hid in the dark corners there. They could not see the Christmas tree, and they felt very sad.
有些蜘蛛跑到樓上的閣樓，躲在了黑暗的角落里。有些跑到了樓下的地窖，躲在黑暗的角落里。它們看不到圣誕樹了，感到很傷心。
At last they went to the Christmas Fairy and told her all about it.
最后，它們去找圣誕仙女，并把一切都告訴了她。
"Dear Fairy" they said, "please be kind and help us to see the Christmas tree. Spiders love beautiful things, too."
“親愛的仙女，”它們說，“請發發慈悲，幫我們去看看圣誕樹吧。蜘蛛也喜歡美麗的東西。”
The Christmas Fairy said, "You shall see the tree. Just wait. I promise to send for you soon."
圣誕仙女說：“你們會看到圣誕樹的。等等，我保證很快就送你們過去。”
