How Tom Went to the Fair
湯姆集市行
Tom could hardly wait for the fair. He had thought about for weeks. On Friday, a big airplane was coming to the fair, and Tom was going to see it.
湯姆迫不及待地想要去集市。他已經想了幾周了。在星期五，一架大飛機要來集市，湯姆要去看它。
Everyone in the farmhouse got up early on Friday morning. Mothers and fathers and the children did their work as fast as they could. Before long, all of them were ready do the ride to town. Away they went in the big car. As they went along the road by the cornfield, father stopped the car.
星期五早上，農舍里的每個人都起得很早。母親、父親和孩子們都盡快完成了他們的工作。不久，所有的人都準備好乘車進城了。他們開大車去集市。當他們沿著玉米地走時，父親停下了車。
"Look, look! The cows are in the corn. I'll have to get them out and mend the fence."
“看，看！牛在玉米地里。我得把它們趕出來，還要修補柵欄。”
Tom jumped down out of the car.
湯姆從車里跳了下來。
"I'll do it, father," he said, "You can take the others to the fair. I'll mend the fence and walk to town.”
他說：“我來做吧，爸爸。你可以帶其他人到集市上去。我來修理柵欄，然后步行進城。”
Tom tried to hurry, but the cows did not want to hurry. At last he got them out of the cornfield and into the pasture. Then he mended the fence.
湯姆想快點兒，但牛不著急。最后，他把它們從玉米地里帶到了牧場。然后他修補了柵欄。
Poor Tom! How he wanted to see that airplane! "I can never walk to town in time to see the airplane now," he thought. "It took me too long to mend the fence."
可憐的湯姆！他多么想去看那飛機啊！他想：“我再也不能及時趕到城里看飛機了，我修補柵欄的時間太長了。”
Just then Tom heard a strange noise in the sky. Nearer and nearer it came.
就在這時，湯姆聽到了天上傳來的奇怪聲音。它漸漸近了。
Tom looked up. What was that high above the tree? It was much bigger than any bird that he had ever seen.
湯姆抬起頭。那棵樹的上面是什么？它比他見過的任何一只鳥都要大得多。
"Oh! An airplane! An airplane!" Tom cried. "It is coming down right in our pasture!"
湯姆大叫道：“噢！是飛機！是飛機！它要降落到我們的牧場上了。"
Down, down came the big airplane. It ran across the pasture and stopped near the fence. A man got out.
大飛機落了下來。它穿過牧場，停在了柵欄附近。一個男人走了出來。
"Hello!" he said. "My plane is out of gasoline. Does your father have any?"
他說：“你好，我的飛機沒油了。你父親有汽油嗎？”
"Oh, yes," said Tom. "We have a bid can full of gasoline in our garage. I'll help you get some."
湯姆說：“有。我們的車庫里有一罐汽油。我幫你拿些來。”
They got the gasoline, and Tom helped the man put it into the airplane.
他們拿了汽油，湯姆幫那個人給飛機加了油。
They pulled the airplane back from the fence, so that it could get a good start. Then the man got in.
他們把飛機從柵欄處拉回來，以便更好地啟動。然后男人上了飛機。
"You have helped me very much." He said to Tom, "Now I can get to the Fair. I am going to fly at the Fair grounds today. Would you like to come with me?"
他對湯姆說：“你幫了我很大的忙。現在我要去集市了。今天我要在集市上飛行。你愿意和我一起去嗎？”
"Oh!" cried Tom, "I should like it more than anything."
湯姆叫道：“噢！那再好不過了。”
"Get in, then." Said the man.
男人說：“那么上來吧。”
Tom climbed into the airplane, and they went rolling across the pasture. Before Tom knew it, they were off the ground.
湯姆爬上飛機，他們在牧場上滑行。在湯姆知道之前，他們已經離開了地面。
Up, up they went. Tom looked down. The farmhouse, the barn and the fields looked very small. The horses and cows lookd like tiny toys. Soon Tom could not see them at all. The fields were just spots of yellow, green , and brown.
他們越飛越高。湯姆向下看時，農舍、谷倉和田野看上去都很小。馬和奶牛看起來像小玩具。不久湯姆就再也看不見它們了。田野里只有黃色、綠色和棕色的斑點了。
Then the airplane stopped climbing, and they began to go like the wind. It was not a very long ride. All it once Tom saw that they were above the Fair Grounds.
然后飛機停止了爬升，他們開始像風一樣地飛行。旅程并不長。突然之間，湯姆就發現他們到集市上方了。
All the people at the Fair Grounds were looking for the airplane. Suddenly they saw it coming.
集市上所有的人都在找飛機。突然就看到它來了。
Tom's family watched the airplane as it came down. They thought about Tom and how he had wanted to see it.
湯姆的家人在飛機降落時也在注視著它。他們想到了湯姆，他是多么想看它啊。
Mary said, "It would be more fun if Tom were here, too. He wanted to see the airplane."
瑪麗說：“如果湯姆也在這里，就更好玩了。他想看飛機。”
"Poor Tom!" said father. "He stayed at home so that we could have a good time at the fair."
父親說：“可憐的湯姆！ 他待在家里，只為我們在集市上玩得愉快。”
"Tom always thinks of others." Said his mother, "I wish he would get here in time to see the airplane."
媽媽說：“湯姆總是為別人著想。我希望他能及時趕到看看飛機。”
The airplane was now on the ground and came rolling slowly across the field. As it came nearer and nearer, someone cried, "Oh look! There is a boy in the airplane."
飛機現在落到地面上，慢慢地在地上滑行。隨著它越來越近，有人叫道：“哦，快看，飛機上有個男孩！”
The airplane stopped. A man got out and then helped the boy out.
飛機停了下來。男人走了出來，然后幫男孩也走出來。
What a surprise for Tom's family! They could hardly believe their own eyes. It was Tom!
這對湯姆一家來說是多么的驚喜！他們簡直不敢相信自己的眼睛。這是湯姆！
They were very proud of him. And he was proud too. He was the only boy who had ever come to the Fair in an airplane.
他們為他感到驕傲。他也很自豪。他是唯一一個乘飛機來集市的男孩。
