LESSON 42 The lost child
第四十二課 失蹤的小孩
I.
第一節(jié)
It was a clear, cold, winter night,
那個(gè)冬天夜晚，晴朗而寒冷，
The heavens were brightly starred,
天空布滿繁星，
When on St. Bernard's snowy height
在圣伯納修道院
The good monks kept their guard.
僧侶們保持著警惕。
And round their hearth, that night, they told,to one, who shelter craved,
那晚在爐邊，他們對(duì)一個(gè)借宿的人談起，
How the brave dog, he thought so old,full forty lives had saved;
那條年邁而勇敢的狗如何挽救整整四十條生命；
When suddenly, with kindling eye,up sprang the old dog there,
突然，老犬眼睛放光，一躍而起，
As from afar a child's shrill cry,rang through the frosty air.
因?yàn)楹⒆拥募饨新曂高^(guò)寒冷的空氣傳到了他們的耳中。
In haste the monks unbarred the door,
僧侶們急忙打開(kāi)門(mén)，
Rugs round the mastiffs threw;
在狗背上綁好毯子；
And as they bounded forth once more,
他們一邊往前走一邊說(shuō)，
Called, "Blessings be with you!"
“上帝保佑！”
II.
第二節(jié)
They hurried headlong down the hill,
他們急忙跑下山，
Past many a snow-wreath wild,
穿過(guò)白雪皚皚的土地，
Until the older dog stood still
直跑到老狗靜靜站著的地方
Beside a sleeping child.
旁邊一個(gè)孩子正在熟睡。
He licked the little icy hand,with his rough, kindly tongue;
它用粗糙的舌頭慈愛(ài)地舔孩子冰冷的小手。
With his warm breath he gently fanned,the tresses fair and long.
伴著呼出的溫暖氣息，它用長(zhǎng)毛給孩子取暖。
The child looked up, with eyes of blue,
孩子抬頭看，眨著藍(lán)色的眼睛，
As if the whole he guessed;
他看到的正如他想的那樣；
His arms around the dog he threw,
它用手抱住狗，
And sunk again to rest.
再次睡去。
Once more he woke, and wrapped him fast,in the warm covering sent:
再次醒來(lái)時(shí)，他快速裹上了溫暖的毯子：
The dogs then with their charge, at last,up the steep mountain went.
隨后和狗一起上了山。
III.
第三節(jié)
The fire glowed bright with heaped-up logs,
柴火燒的很旺，
Each monk brought forth a light;
每個(gè)僧侶都取出一個(gè)火把
"Good dogs!" they cried, "good dogs, good dogs!
“好狗！”他們歡呼，“真實(shí)好狗！
Whom bring you here to-night?"
今晚是誰(shuí)把你帶到這來(lái)的？”
In with a joyous bound they come—
他們高興地走了過(guò)來(lái)——
The boy awoke and smiled:
男孩醒來(lái)，微笑：
"Ah me!" the stranger cried, "some home mourneth for thee, fair child!"
“呀我！”這些陌生人歡呼，“孩子，今晚這就是你的家！”
With morning light the monks and boy sought where the village lay—
天亮后，僧侶們幫孩子找回家的路——
I dare not try to paint the joy
我不敢描述這種快樂(lè)
Their coming gave that day.
他們的到來(lái)才有了那一天。
QUESTIONS

What were the monks telling the stranger? What made the old dog spring up? What did the monks throw round the mastiffs? What did they call after them? What did the older dog find in the snow? What did the child do when he awoke the first time? And the second time? What did the stranger say when the boy was brought in? What did the monks do next morning?
