1. matter作可數(shù)名詞，意為"事情；問題；情況"。作不可數(shù)名詞，意為"物質(zhì)；材料；東西"。例如：

Let's leave that for the moment. We have more important matters to think about.
讓我們先把那事擱一邊吧。我們還有更重要的事情需要考慮呢。
The universe is made up of matter. 宇宙是由物質(zhì)組成的。
I have nothing to do now. Could you offer me some reading matter?
我現(xiàn)在無事可做。你能給我點兒可讀的東西嗎？

2. matter作動詞，意為"有關(guān)系；要緊"。通常用于否定句和疑問句，句中常常含有what, who, where, if等詞，一般以it作主語。例如：

It doesn't matter if I miss the train, because there's another later.
我要是誤了這趟火車也不要緊，因為晚些時候還有一趟車呢。
Does it matter a great deal to her whether they come or not？
他們是否來，這與她有很大關(guān)系嗎？

3. 由matter構(gòu)成的常用短語。

no matter

①不要緊；無關(guān)緊要。此短語可單獨用，也可接that, whether引導(dǎo)的從句。例如：
There is no matter whether he has worked abroad.
他有沒有在國外工作過都沒關(guān)系。

②no matter+特殊疑問詞；意為"無論......"，用來引導(dǎo)狀語從句。例如：
No matter where you go, please let me know. 無論你去哪里，請告訴我一聲。

2. the matter意為"有問題；出毛病；麻煩事"，常常同不定代詞anything, something, nothing等連用，意為"有點兒什么問題"或"沒有什么問題"等。例如：
-Is there anything the matter? 有什么問題嗎？
-Of course, there's something the matter. 當(dāng)然，有問題。

3. as a matter of fact 事實上(用來加強語氣)。例如：
As a matter of fact, I know nothing about the matter.
事實上，我對此事一無所知。

"the more..., the more..."句型

1."the more..., the more..."句型常表示"越……就越……",是一個復(fù)合句,其中前面的句子是狀語從句,后面的句子是主句。the用在形容詞或副詞的比較級前,more代表形容詞或副詞的比較級。例如:The more he gets, the more he wants. 他越來越貪。

2."the more..., the more..."句型,主從句的時態(tài)常用一般現(xiàn)在時或一般過去時。例如:The higher the ground is, the thinner air becomes. 離地面越高,空氣就越稀薄。

3. 若主句的謂語動詞用一般將來時,從句的謂語動詞要用一般現(xiàn)在時表示將來。例如:The harder you work, the greater progress you will make. 你越用功,進步就越大。

4. 若比較級作表語且不位于句首時,可以不用the。例如:When we are more in danger, we should be braver. 越是危險,我們越應(yīng)勇敢。
