216.Talk Me out of It!
216.勸我別去！
John was trying to talk Jane out of going on the talk show, but he wasn't having much luck. Even when he started to talk a mile a minute, she still didn't listen.
約翰正在勸簡不要上那個訪談節目，可是他的運氣不怎么好。即使他開始說話像連珠炮，可她還是不聽。
"You're taking up my time, John! Now leave, I have to take a shower and get ready!"
“你占用了我的時間，約翰！你走吧。我得洗個淋浴、做好準備！”
But I have to talk some sense into you! They're going to humiliate you on that show! They took your measure in those preliminary meetings and you're just padding! They just want you there to take up space! That other guy is the one everyone wants to see!
“可我得和你講道理！他們會在做節目的時候羞辱你的！在頭幾次見面的時候他們已經估計過你的能力，你不過是個陪襯！他們只想你到那里占個地方！另外那個家伙才是大家想見的人！”
"Shut up! Take wing before I kick you out myself!" she said.
“住嘴！在我把你趕走之前你自己離開吧！”她說。
Fine，fine! John said, not wanting to talk back to her anymore. And then he left. As he was leaving he almost went back to try again! But then he decided that Jane should go her own way!
“好，好！”約翰說，他不想再跟她頂嘴。然后他就走了。走的時候他差點兒又回來再試一次！不過最后還是認為簡應該按自己的主張行事。
The following day, after the talk show, John saw Jane at the coffee shop taking up a collection for orphaned blind children.
第二天，在訪談節目之后，約翰在咖啡店看到了簡，她正在為沒有父母的肓童孤兒募捐。
What's this? John asked.
“這是怎么回事？”約翰問。
You didn't watch the show? Jane replied sheepishly. "It was a disaster. Somehow I started talking off the top of my head to try and convince them that I was somebody interesting. Now they think that I'm this big charity woman forming a new school for the blind! If I don't try, the whole world will know I was a fake!"
“你沒有看節目嗎？”簡窘迫地說。“那是一場災難。不知怎的，我開始即興勸他們說我是個令人關注的人。現在他們認為我是個有名的慈善女人，正為盲人建一所新學校！如果我不試一下，全世界都將知道我是個騙子！”
John held back a laugh. But he was only able to talk out of the comer of his mouth, his face wanted to laugh so hard!
約翰強忍著笑。但他只能用嘴角說話，他的臉實在是想笑！
I didn't take a hand in any of this! I tried to stop you! he replied.
“這事兒我可沒有參與！我還勸過你不要去呢！”他答道。
Jane almost punched him!
簡差點兒給了他一拳。
You should have tried harder!
“你應該多使點兒勁勸我的！”
