Josh knew he was coming up in the world!
喬希知道他很快就要飛黃騰達(dá)了！
He finally had a good enough job to ride the commuter train to work every day!
他終于找到了一份十分理想的工作，每天可以乘市郊往返列車上班了！
That train was only for rich people, and now he was among them.
那種車只有富人才坐得起，現(xiàn)在他也能坐了。
He was sure people would come up to him to have interesting conversations.
他相信人們會走上前來和他進(jìn)行一些有意思的對話。
He was wrong.
他錯了。
Everyone on the commuter train was bored stiff.
車上每個人都無聊得很。
And no one commented on how another looked.
沒人評論別人的外表。
It was impossible to compare one person with another anyhow; they all wore the same clothing.
確實(shí)也是，人與人沒法比較，大家穿得都一樣。
When Josh tried to talk to one man about the weather, he reacted as if conversation was commensurate with a waste of time.
喬希試著和一個男人談?wù)撎鞖猓姆磻?yīng)像是談話等于浪費(fèi)時間。
Josh's shoelace started to come undone, but then a hand touched his shoulder and someone said, "You have to come up with a more interesting topic. We don't want to talk about the weather anymore."
喬希的鞋帶開始松了，這時有只手搭在他的肩上，有人說道：“你得想出一個更有意思的話題。我們已經(jīng)對天氣不感興趣。”
Those words were comparable to a slap in the face for Josh, but he decided that, come what may, he would try to start an interesting conversation.
這番話對喬希來說好比是在臉上抽了一耳光，但他下定決心不管怎樣要找一個更有意思的話題。
He told himself that he was committed to socializing with the upper class!
他告訴自己他是在與上層社會交往！
Each day, however, he came up against the same exasperating reaction.
但是，他每天都會碰到同樣的令人惱怒的反應(yīng)。
No topic he tried interested anyone on the train.
他試過的話題沒能讓車上任何人感興趣。
He tried talking about football，local news, new cars, even good-looking women.

One day he finally came upon the topic eveiyone was interested in.
一天他終于碰上了一個大家都感興趣的話題。
Talking more to himself than to anyone else Josh said that he wished he could earn more money.
他與其說是在跟別人說話,不如說是在自言自語，他說希望自己能賺更多的錢。
Everyone turned.
大家都轉(zhuǎn)過頭來。
And as if they were just coming into existence they began to talk to Josh about their ideas on how to make more money.
他們都像剛剛才出現(xiàn)一樣，開始和喬希討論如何才能賺更多的錢。
That was the topic they were all interested in: money.
這才是他們都感興趣的話題：錢！
