This is a true story from my own life.
這是發(fā)生在我自己身上的一個(gè)真實(shí)故事。
In my first year in high school, I was addicted to video games.
在我上中學(xué)的第一年時(shí)，我沉迷于電子游戲。
I played them all the time and I wasn't studying enough.
我整天整夜得玩電子游戲，學(xué)習(xí)一點(diǎn)也不用心。
I was failing Chemistry that was my hardest class.
化學(xué)課對(duì)我來說最難了，這門課我掛了。
So this was a conflict for me because I wanted a good job when I grew up and I believed,
所以，這導(dǎo)致我內(nèi)心有點(diǎn)掙扎。因?yàn)槲蚁氲茸约洪L(zhǎng)大以后，能找到一份好工作。
I knew, that if you want a good career you gotta do well in school.
而且我相信，我認(rèn)為，如果你想要事業(yè)有成的話，那么你在學(xué)校的表現(xiàn)一定要好。
But I just couldn't give up video games! I was completely torn.
但是我又無法放棄電子游戲！我感覺整個(gè)人都快要被分裂了。
And my solution was to change my perspective.
然后，我的解決方法就是改變自己的看法。
See, the only class I was doing really badly in was Chemistry.
瞧，我就一門化學(xué)課表現(xiàn)得很差勁。
In the others, I was OK. So I asked myself if I wanted to be a chemist when I grew up?
其他課程，我的成績(jī)還行。所以我就問我自己，你長(zhǎng)大后想當(dāng)化學(xué)家嗎？
And the fact is I didn't. I was pretty sure I wanted to be a sociologist.
事實(shí)是我不想成為化學(xué)家。我很確信自己想當(dāng)一名社會(huì)學(xué)家。
So I told myself my chemistry class didn't matter, because sociologist don't need to know chemistry.
所以我對(duì)自己說，化學(xué)課不重要，因?yàn)樯鐣?huì)學(xué)家不需要懂化學(xué)。
In other words, I changed my understanding of what it meant to do well in school.
換句話說，我改變了自己對(duì)在學(xué)校表現(xiàn)好的定義。
I reinterpreted my situation. I used to think that doing well in school meant doing well in all my classes.
我重新解讀了自己的情形。我以前認(rèn)為在學(xué)校表現(xiàn)好就意味著門門功課都要做得好。
But now I decided that succeeding in school meant only doing well in the classes that related directly with my future career.
但是現(xiàn)在我認(rèn)定，在學(xué)校表現(xiàn)優(yōu)秀意味著只要在和我未來職業(yè)直接相關(guān)的課程中表現(xiàn)優(yōu)秀就可以了。
I eliminated the conflict, at least in my mind.
我弱化了自己內(nèi)心的斗爭(zhēng)，至少是在思想上弱化了。
