My Opinion on Human-powered Search

Human-powered search, or Renrou Sousuo, has gained its popularity among Netizens in recent years. With Netizens participating in search, humanpowered search becomes an efficient tool to find desired information. In 2006, a Netizen uploaded a picture showing that a "beautiful” woman was maltreating a delicate kitty. The maltreatment was so intolerable that Netizens decided to find out the culprit. Six days later, an anonymous Netizen submitted a post describing that the wanted woman lived in a town in a northern province andother detailed information. This successful case is followed by a series of human-powered search and arouses an ongoing controversy over the legality of human-powered search.
近些年，人肉搜索受到了人們的廣泛關注，特別是在網友中。網友也會參與到搜索之中，人肉搜索已經成為了尋找信息的有效手段。2006年，一位網友上傳了一幅照片，照片顯示的是一位美女正在虐待一只小貓。這樣的虐待讓人忍無可忍，網友決定尋找真兇。六天以后，一位沒留下姓名的網友上傳了一個帖子，帖子上說這個美女住在北部省份的城鎮，還揭露了一些細節消息。這個事件的成功源于人肉搜索的成功，但是這樣的行為引起了人們對人肉搜索合法性的熱議。
Personally, I am of opinion that the new way of search is acceptable. Firstly, in retrospect, nearly all the targets of human-powered search are directed to those who violated moral rules of our society, or are corrupted officials. Thanks to the human-powered search, those immoral people have been made public. Some did now show due respect to our former leaders, some spread erotic video to make a name, some outlet their personal resentment by making negative comments on earthquake-stricken victims, some maltreat their step-children, to list a few of those norm violators. Undoubtedly, once those culprits have been located by combined efforts of Netizens, they would get at least moral punishments. In this sense, human-powered search proves to be an effective means to find out norm violators and even criminals and give them a dose of theirown medicine, so that we can build a more harmonious society.
我個人認為，這樣的搜尋方式是可以接受的。首先，回顧事件，人肉搜索的幾乎所有目標都是那些違反社會道德標準的人，或是貪官污吏。由于有了人肉搜索，這些缺乏道德的人被公諸于眾。我們的前任領導人受到了人們的尊敬，許多人在網上散布色情視頻，許多人在網上敘說自己的觀點，并對地震受害者給予消極評價，許多人虐待繼子女，我們只是列舉了少數違反道德的例子。但是，一旦這些人被網友鎖定，他們至少會得到道德的懲罰。從這一點來說，人肉搜索很有效，它是一種尋找道德違反者，甚至是罪犯的有效手段，人肉搜索會讓他們自食其果，這有這樣，我們才能建立更為和諧的社會。
Secondly, through the process of human-powered search, participants get educated by renouncing the immoralities and hence established norms get strengthened. In a society where members lay their emphasis on how to make a fortune, how to gain celebrity, and how to climb to a higher layer of power pyramid, traditional virtues are deteriorating, which explains the frequency of those moral violations in recent years. When participants succeeded in putting those moral violators under public scrutiny. they will not only take pridein their success to enforce moral rules, but also realize that they will get the same dose of medicine if they make similar mistakes. Gradually, the severity of moral punishments is likely to be conveyed to the whole society and therefore virtues get consolidated.
第二，通過人肉搜索，參與者將會得到一次教育，這樣，現有的體制將會得到完善。在現在社會中，人們重視如何掙錢，如何出名，如何爭權奪利，傳統價值觀正在遭到破壞，這也就能解釋近些年違反道德事件頻發的原因。當參與者將這些違反道德之人公布于眾時，他們不僅會對他們加強道德規范的行為而感到驕傲，而且還意識到，他們也會以此為戒，防止犯相同的錯誤。通常，如何懲罰這些違反道德的人，這應該由社會決定，只有這樣，道德觀念才能更加完善。
As a coin has two sides, human-powered search is accused of intruding personal privacy and other negative points. In some cities, authorities have tried to prohibit the search. However, norm violators should not get away with punishment. I believe that, with the gradual perfection of human-powered search, it will receive a wide application.
凡事有兩面，人肉搜索侵犯了個人的隱私，并會引起其他不良事件。在許多城市，政府正在試圖避免這樣的搜索行動。但是，違反道德規范的人不應該逃避懲罰。我相信，隨著人肉搜索的不斷完善，它還將得到更廣泛的利用。
