A sessions court in Kolkata convicted Sanjay Roy for a life in prison in the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday. The court ordered Roy to pay 50,000 rupees (around $930) as a fine, and directed the state of West Bengal to pay 1.7 million rupees (around $32,000) to the victim's family as compensation. According to Indian media, "Life imprisonment, meaning imprisonment until death."
The case pertains to the 31-year-old postgraduate medical trainee whose body was discovered in a seminar room on Aug 9, 2024. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested the following day.
This case has sparked nationwide protests for justice. The court began the trial of the case in November last year, hearing testimony from at least 50 witnesses. Roy has repeatedly stated that he is innocent and that he is being framed. Roy's defense lawyer argued that there is a significant discrepancy between the case investigation report and the forensic findings.
The CBI, which was probing the case, said it comes under the "rarest of rare" category and the maximum punishment, which is the death penalty, should be awarded to Roy to "maintain people's faith in society".
The victim's mother claimed that if Roy had not been sentenced to death, people would have lost faith in the Indian justice system. The victim's father argued that Roy alone could not have committed the crime and stated that they would be satisfied only when all those involved were brought to justice. However, the Calcutta court ruled that Roy was the sole culprit in the case.
Following the case in August last year, doctors and medical students across India staged protests and demanded justice for the victim and stronger security measures in state-run hospitals. Tens of thousands of women have also taken to the streets of Kolkata and other cities at night to emphasize women's safety and rights.
