The celestial phenomenon happens a few times during every lunar cycle because the moon's orbit is elliptical, meaning there are intervals when Earth’s only permanent natural satellite is closer or farther from the planet.
這種天體現象在每個月球周期都會發生幾次，因為月球的軌道是橢圓形的，這意味著地球唯一的永久天然衛星離地球更近或更遠。
Along the lunar orbital path, the point of closest proximity is known as perigee, which is when the moon is, on average, 226,000 miles (363,300 kilometers) from Earth. When a full moon phase coincides with perigee, a supermoon event occurs.
在月球軌道上，最接近月球的點被稱為近地點，也就是月球離地球平均226,000英里（363,300公里）的時候。當滿月與近地點重合時，就會出現超級月亮。
Typically, the moon orbits an average distance of about 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) from its host planet, but during this month's supermoon, it will be just 222,095 miles (357,428 kilometers) from Earth, making it the closest full moon of 2024.

A full supermoon is estimated to appear up to 30 percent brighter and nearly 14 percent bigger than a full moon at its farthest from Earth.

The full moon in October is known as the Hunter's moon, which originated from Native Americans. Because it takes place around the start of hunting season and traditionally offered a key opportunity to spot prey lurking in recently harvested fields.
10月的這輪滿月又稱為狩獵月（Hunter's moon）。這個名字起源于美洲土著，因為它恰逢狩獵季節的開始，并為獵人們提供了發現潛伏在新近收割的田地中的獵物的好時機。
For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a traditional aid to farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops. Hence, it's called the Harvest Moon!

Since fields had recently been cleared out under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily spot deer and other animals that had come out to search for remaining scraps.
