There are certain food odors associated with different activities. For example, the smell of coffee means it's time to wake up and start the day. Similarly, the smell of perfume reminds you of someone or the specific smell immediately reminiscent of a familiar time or space.

All of this is automatically learned, but you can train your brain to use neural pathways to recognize new odors. For example, if you want to train your mind to remember going to bed at a certain time each night, choose a dreamy scent like lavender and leave a bottle of essential oil near the bed for about a week, smelling it first when sleeping.
