Level by nature to this earth's horizon are the glances of man's eyes; not shot from the crown of his head, as if God had meant him to gaze on his firmament.
接著，他凝視著他那只象限儀，又一件一件地拿著象限儀上許多神秘的零件，再沉思一下，喃喃道："傻瓜的玩物！是一些傲慢的海軍大將。艦長和船長的小娃娃玩具！人們把你夸大了，把你的巧計和力量給夸大了；可是，你究竟有啥本事呢？只不過告訴你自己和手里拿你的人是在這個大星球上的哪一個可憐的地點而已。不！再也沒有別的用處了！你連一滴水，一粒沙明天正午會在哪里也說不出；然而，你卻以你的無能來侮辱太陽！科學！該死的東西，你這該死的、百無一用的玩物；一切叫人們的眼睛仰望上天的東西都是該死的，上天那生氣勃勃的亮光把人燒焦了倒是有份，正如我這雙衰老的眼睛現在讓你，讓你這個太陽的光輝給燒炙了一般！人類的眼力，天生就是平視的，并不是長在頭頂上的，仿佛上帝故意要人凝望它那蒼穹。
