The last few years have been pretty tough in the United Kingdom as the ‘Great Recession’ hit the sovereign-state hard. In 2008, during the early days of the economic downturn, UK unemployment and government debt rose significantly. In 2013, the UK was dealt another blow to its global economic and political credibility, losing their AAA credit rating for the first time since 1978. All that being said, it does look like Britain is bouncing back -- slowly. So what is life really like for the 64 million people who call Britain, home?
In terms of schooling, the British education system is still regarded as one of the best in the world although that reputation seems to be slipping. Cutbacks, installed during the recession haven’t stopped and experts argue these policies have negatively impacted the quality of education that British kids receive. After children leave school at the age of 16, they’re faced with the choice of finding employment or pursuing higher education.
However, experts argue that kids from poorer backgrounds are limited in their choices, as university fees are expensive and a lot of young people just don’t see it as a viable choice. But as many university grads have found out -- in the UK and coincidentally in the US-- having a degree doesn’t necessarily mean that you can secure a job. In a survey conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency in 2014, of the 250,000 people that graduated from UK universities more than 18,000 were unemployed six months after leaving university and a further 60,000 were in jobs that didn’t even require a degree. With the rise in poverty and unemployment, it’s no surprise that young people in the UK are frustrated by their lack of prospects, a feeling that was made apparent during the London riots in 2011.
The UK’s national language is English but other native languages spoken include Gaelic,Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. To a lesser extent,South Asian languages such as Bengali, Punjabi,Hindi and Gujarati are also spoken, because the UK has a more diverse population than some think. In London alone there are over 250 different languages spoken. And that’s because Britain has one of the most multicultural societies in the world. Which has certainly had a positive effect on the nation's opinions regarding equality, tolerance and acceptance.
The divide between racial lines is diminishing when it comes to love and relationships too, nearly one in ten couples are ethnically mixed in the UK and according to census data from 2011 people of mixed ethnicity are among the fastest-growing groups in the British population.
British populations are also growing abroad.More British people are relocating to other countries than ever before. Perhaps it was the recession or maybe it’s the gloomy weather, but in the last decade, 5 million Brits chose to settle in another country. And many of those expats, myself included, are often surprised by some of the misconceptions other countries have about British people -- watch this video to find out more.
