據《鄭州晚報》報道，中國天氣網公布的天氣排行中，中國氣溫最高的前10個城市中中部河南省占據了9個。

根據中國天氣網7月21日下午兩點的統計，鞏義市以41.6℃（degrees centigrade）的高溫領跑全國，排名榜首（top the ranking），而曾經被認為是中國最熱地區（the hottest place）的吐魯番則僅位列第10。
晚上七點時，排行稍有變化，不過河南仍有8個城市上榜（on the list），榜首變成了河南孟州，最高氣溫（highest temperature）出現在17時，觀測溫度為42℃。
河南省氣象臺（Meteorological Observatory）解釋稱，移動中的副熱帶高壓（subtropical high weather）正好控制河南省，形成晴熱少雨天氣，導致河南省的高溫天氣（high temperature）。不過后半周（the latter half of the week），河南省將迎來雨水天氣。
許多網民在微博和微信等社交媒體平臺（social media sites）拿高溫開玩笑，稱鞏義市像蒸籠（steam box）一樣，也有說河南省省會（provincial capital）鄭州市應被看作是（be regarded as）中國新的火爐城市（"stove" city）。
