"鹽"能吃也能"用"

在eat one’s salt 中，salt 代表的是阿拉伯待客的最高禮節。按照阿拉伯人的習慣，款待客人要用食鹽，就像我們國家蒙古族人招待客人時總要熱情地獻上糯米酒一樣。吃了別人的食鹽便與那人有了神圣之交，不可忘恩負義，更不可反過來傷害人家或講人家壞話。英國19世紀偉大的浪漫主義詩人拜倫(George Gordon Baron，1788-1824)在他著名敘事詩《海盜》（The Corsair, 1814）中曾寫：“你為何不吃食鹽？那神圣的誓言一旦實現，便能使爭斗的雙方握手言和，能使宿敵看上去如同親兄弟一般。”如今，這一條習語在英語中的意思是“受人款待”。
