Down to the wire來自于皇家賽馬比賽，這里的wire是指賽馬跑道終點拉的終點線。賽馬的過程并不能定勝負，只有最先沖過終點的馬才是獲勝者，所以down to the wire的意思是“直到最后，接近最后期限”。所以leave it down to the wire就表示“直到最后才開始做事，把事情拖到最后關頭”。
