1. apply for
申請；請求
eg. Don't apply for that job: you're in danger of overreaching yourself.
不要申請那份工作，以免有不自量力之嫌。
eg. You can apply for citizenship after five years' residency.
居住五年后可申請公民資格。
2. in order to
為了；以便；目的在于
eg. Most schools are extremely unwilling to cut down on staff in order to cut costs.
大部分學校都很不愿意為減少開支而裁員。
eg. We need to get rid of the idea that we must be liked all the time in order to be worthwhile.
我們必須拋棄那種認為要想活得有價值就得始終取悅他人的想法。
3. base on
以……為基礎；
eg. He based his conclusions on the evidence given by the captured prisoners.
他根據被俘囚犯提供的證據得出了這個結論。
eg. One should always base his opinion on facts.
一個人應該始終以事實為依據發表自己的觀點。
4. put down
寫下；記錄；鍵入
eg. Never put anything down on paper which might be used in evidence against you at a later date.
一定不要寫下任何書面的東西，以免日后被用作對你不利的證據。
eg. We've put down on our staff development plan for this year that we would like some technology courses.
我們已經在今年的員工發展計劃中寫到我們希望有一些技術培訓課程。
5. Neither do I
表示現實情況的否定。前面一句為否定句。表示我也沒有，我也不那樣；
eg. "Neither do I, " I answered promptly.
“我也是如此。”我馬上答道。
eg. You do not know that and neither do I, but I suspect it will be poor.
你不知道回報會有多高,我也不知道,但我猜這個數字將會很低。
