Two young engineers applied for a single poition at a computer company. They both had the same qualifications. In order to determine which individual to hire, the applicants were asked to take a test of 12 questions by the manager of human resources department.
兩個年輕的工程師應聘一家電腦公司的同一個職位。他們的資歷相當。為了決定雇用哪個，公司的人力資源部經理要他們做一個測試——回答12個問題。
Upon completion of the test, both men had each missed only one of the questions. The manager went to the first applicant and said, "Thank you for your interest, but we've decided to give the job to the other applicant."
測試結束后，兩個人各有一個問題沒答上來，經理對其中的一個說：“感謝你對我們公司的關注，可是我們決定聘用另一個人。”
"And why would you be doing that? We both got eleven questions correct," asked the rejected applicant.
“可是為什么呢？我們兩人都答對了11道題呀，”不被錄用的人問。
"We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed," said the department manager.
“我們做出這個決定不是基于正確的答案，而是基于你們沒有答對的那個問題，”經理答道。
"And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?" the rejected applicant inquired.
“那么一個錯誤答案能比另一個錯誤答案好到哪里去呢？”不被錄用的人問。
"Simple," said the department manager, "Your fellow applicant put down on question No.8, 'I don't know.' You put down, 'Neither do I.''"
“很簡單，”經理說，“另一位應聘者對于第8題的回答是‘我不知道’；而你的回答是‘我也不知道。’”
