Mark P. The theme that no progress is possible without sacrifice is also seen in the Allied operations in the Second World War. In preparation for the eventual conquest of the European continent, the Allied commanders had decided to eliminate the Axis powers' exterior defenses in North Africa, Sicily, and Asia. Once the strategy for Operation Overlord was completed the amassing of Allied forces in England began. On June 6,1944 after two days of delays, the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France and assaulted the Germans’ Fortress Europe. During the course of the day the American and British forces underwent heavy casualties on the Omaha, Utah, and Juneau beaches. However, after enormous sacrifice the Allied forces were victorious.
