【Rail and air Competition or cooperation】中國航空與鐵路,合作or競爭?
If you ever thought about having yumcha in Guangzhou in the morning and be in Beijing to catch an evening concert - without taking a flight -here's your chance - the world’s longest high-speed railway will open between Beijing and Guangzhou on Wednesday.
Trains will run at speeds of around 300 kilometers per hour, cutting travel time between the two cities from 20 hours to just 8. But it also means the competition between China's planes and trains is heating up.
Li Chaojie is an assets management director in charge of the cities along the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway. He used to travel by air, but things have changed since the Zhengzhou-Guangzhou section opened in September.
Li Chaojie, director of Asset MGMT, Sealand Securities, said, “Now I take the bullet train from Zhengzhou to Changsha instead of flying, because it really saves time. I think the price is also fair and stable. ”
People in Zhengzhou enjoy more travel options because it is a transport hub for central China. But the new high-speed route has lured passengers from flights often delayed due to airspace restrictions and poor weather.
Zheng Chunyan, passenger, said, “I prefer to use the high-speed train to Beijing if I have to go there on business, because it goes into the center of town. I don’t have to waste time traveling to and from the airport. ”
Running at an average speed of 300 km per hour, it only took two and a half hours for the train to cover the 693 km from Zhengzhou to Beijing…and it is just 5 and half hours to Guangzhou.
That will have a huge impact on the local airline industry.
Li xiaofeng, dep. GM of China Southern Airlines, said, “It’s very challenging. I think we may lose over 50% of passengers traveling routes of less than 800 kilometers, once the high speed railway goes into service. We’ve slashed ticket prices, and we are trying to find other ways to improve our competitiveness. ”
Some airlines have jointly launched train and plane packages with railway authorities. China Eastern Airlines even offers free tickets for the high-speed train between Suzhou and Shanghai if people take its flights from Shanghai.
The relationship between the airlines and high-speed rail IS a competitive one. But it’s also very complementary. Once China’s high-speed rail network is complete, it’s hoped a natural balance can be reached between rail and air, giving everyone a much wider choice of travel options.
