他停下汽車，在安娜那兒度過了一天 / 消磨了一天時間。

正確譯文：

他停下車和安娜打了個招呼。

翻譯加油站：

初看原譯頗講得通，但是仔細推敲就會發現問題。如果他真在安娜那兒度過了一天，那就不僅僅是stopped the car（“將汽車臨時停下來”，甚至可以不一定要關發動機，比如遇到紅燈時），而一定會parked the car（停放在一定位置，當然要關發動機）。關鍵問題還在于pass the time of day不等于spend the (whole) day，嚴格說，the time of day中的day一詞原有的“（一）天”的概念已經淡化了。

《英語習語大詞典》把time of day列為一條，給了四個解釋：“1.（鐘表上的）時刻；2.（某個）時刻，現時，目前；3. 當前的情況，真實的狀態；4. 最新的流行式樣。”這樣看來，pass the time of day充其量只能是過了較短的時間。可是問題還不僅僅是時間長短，該詞典中pass the time of day with sb. 是作為另一條成語列出的，其解釋是：“（與某人）寒暄，問候，（見面時）互道早安（晚安）。”所以“他”并沒有和安娜一起共度任何時光，當然更談不上度過了一天 / 消磨了一天時間，只是停車打了個招呼而已。要是真的一起共度了一段時間，只需簡單說spend some time together。

英語中還有一些短語，其中的the time of day也不能從字面上去理解，如：know the time of day：機靈、能隨機應變或消息靈通；not give somebody the time of day：很討厭某人；put somebody up to the time of day：使某人了解某事內情或最新進展。

如何“度過”時間有許多表達方式，一般的“花時間”是：pass the/one's time (doing something), spin out time, fill in/up (the) time, pass the time away, dedicate one's time (to...), devote one's time (to...), fill in one's spare time。

如果是沒有事情做，即when time hangs heavy on one's hand/ one has time to burn,“消磨時間”有許多說法，大部分的意思可從字面推導出來：while away/doze away/idle away/fool away/fritter away/loiter away time, squander time, cheat the time, kill time, waste time等。
