I must admit, I didn't like Tom in the begining.
我得承認(rèn)，當(dāng)初我并不喜歡湯姆。
He live in the house that was adjacent to mine, and I knew he was addicted to painkillers.
他住在我隔壁，而且我知道他吃止痛藥成癮。
He had injured his back while building adobe houses in the countryside for the local government administration.
他在鄉(xiāng)下給當(dāng)?shù)卣w泥磚房時(shí)傷了后背。
The painkillers numbed his back pain and allowed him to continue performing his heavy construction work.

However, it wasn't long before he got caught for failing to adhere to the drug laws.

I still recall what the judge told him shortly before he adjourned the court,

"You'll either have to adapt to a life without drugs or adjust to living in the prison that adjoins this courthouse."

I was admittedly upset when the judge asked me to help administer Tom's probation.
不可否認(rèn)，當(dāng)法官讓我協(xié)助執(zhí)行湯姆的緩刑時(shí)，我很煩惱。
I felt that the judge was making me an unwilling and unnecessary adjunct to the court system.

But I had no choice.

I thought to myself, "Adaptation is the key."

So I change attitude towards Tom and I soon learned that Tom wad just as adaptable.

Tom heeded the judge's warning.
湯姆沒(méi)把法官的警告當(dāng)耳旁風(fēng)。
He quit his construction job and stopped using painkillers.
他辭掉了建筑工作，不再使用止痛藥，
He put all of his time and effort into inventing a new adhesive for constructing brick houses.
并把全部時(shí)間和精力投入到發(fā)明蓋磚瓦房所需的新型粘合劑中。
His dedication was admirable.
他全身心的投入令人欽佩。
He became quite adept at chemisty and before long,
他搞起化學(xué)來(lái)很有一手，
he discovered a key additive that made his glue superior to all another adhesives.
不久他找到了關(guān)鍵的添加劑，加入它以后，他的膠水就成了最好的粘合劑。
Now, I greatly admire Tom and he was become a good friend.
現(xiàn)在，我非常佩服湯姆，我們成為了好朋友。
I guess adaptation really is the key!
我猜適應(yīng)真的是關(guān)鍵！
