While Dudley lolled around watching and eating ice cream,
達(dá)力吃著冰淇淋，在一旁晃來(lái)晃去地看著哈利擦窗戶(hù)，Harry cleaned the windows,
washed the car, mowed the lawn,
洗汽車(chē)，修整草坪，
trimmed the flowerbeds, pruned and watered the roses, and repainted the garden bench.
整理花圃，給玫瑰剪枝澆水，重新油漆花園長(zhǎng)凳。
The sun blazed overhead, burning the back of his neck.
烈日當(dāng)頭，曬得哈利后脖頸發(fā)燙。
Harry knew he shouldn’t have risen to Dudley’s bait, but Dudley had said the very thing Harry had been thinking himself . . .
哈利知道他不應(yīng)該上達(dá)力的鉤，可是達(dá)力說(shuō)中了哈利的心事……
maybe he didn’t have any friends at Hogwarts. . . .
也許他在霍格沃茨根本沒(méi)有朋友……
Wish they could see famous Harry Potter now, he thought savagely as he spread manure on the flower beds,
“但愿他們能看到大名鼎鼎的哈利波特現(xiàn)在的樣子。”往花壇里撒糞肥的時(shí)候，他發(fā)狠地想道。
his back aching, sweat running down his face.
他腰酸背疼，汗水順著臉頰往下流。
It was half past seven in the evening when at last, exhausted, he heard Aunt Petunia calling him.
一直到晚上七點(diǎn)半，才終于聽(tīng)到佩妮姨媽喊他，他已經(jīng)精疲力竭。
“Get in here! And walk on the newspaper!”
“進(jìn)來(lái)！踩著報(bào)紙走！”
Harry moved gladly into the shade of the gleaming kitchen.
哈利高興地走進(jìn)陰涼的、擦得閃閃發(fā)亮的廚房里。
On top of the fridge stood tonight’s pudding:

a huge mound of whipped cream and sugared violets.

A loin of roast pork was sizzling in the oven.
一大塊烤肉在烤箱里咝咝作響。
“Eat quickly! The Masons will be here soon!” snapped Aunt Petunia,
“快吃！海森他們快要來(lái)了！”佩妮姨媽嚴(yán)厲地說(shuō)，
pointing to two slices of bread and a lump of cheese on the kitchen table.
指著廚房桌子上的兩塊面包和一堆奶酪。
She was already wearing a salmon-pink cocktail dress.
她已經(jīng)穿上了一件淺橙色的雞尾酒會(huì)禮服。
Harry washed his hands and bolted down his pitiful supper.
哈利洗了手，匆匆吞下了他那點(diǎn)可憐的晚飯。
The moment he had finished, Aunt Petunia whisked away his plate. “Upstairs! Hurry!”
他剛一吃完，佩妮姨媽就把盤(pán)子收走了。
As he passed the door to the living room,
“上樓！快！”經(jīng)過(guò)客廳門(mén)口時(shí)，
Harry caught a glimpse of Uncle Vernon and Dudley in bow ties and dinner jackets.
哈利瞥了一眼穿著禮服、打著領(lǐng)結(jié)的弗農(nóng)姨父和達(dá)力。
He had only just reached the upstairs landing when the doorbell rang and Uncle Vernon’s furious face appeared at the foot of the stairs.
他剛走到樓上，門(mén)鈴就響了，弗農(nóng)姨父兇巴巴的臉出現(xiàn)在樓梯下。
“Remember, boy — one sound —”
“記著，小子——你要敢發(fā)出一點(diǎn)兒聲音……”
Harry crossed to his bedroom on tiptoe, slipped inside, closed the door, and turned to collapse on his bed.
哈利踮著腳走到自己臥室門(mén)口，悄悄溜進(jìn)去，關(guān)上門(mén)，轉(zhuǎn)身想要一頭撲倒在他的床上。
The trouble was, there was already someone sitting on it.
問(wèn)題是，床上已經(jīng)坐了一個(gè)人。
