"Successor," a Chinese-produced comedy drama about tiger parenting, opened on top of the mainland China box office over the latest weekend.

The film charts the ups and downs of a poor dad and a hardworking mom, living in a broken yard and seemingly having fallen behind others on the road to prosperity.

Shen Teng and Ma Li play the couple that in reality own a successful business and are determined to groom their son to take over the company. Worried that he will turn into a useless rich kid, they decide to raise him in something resembling poverty.

On Chinese social media, many users complained that the criticism of tiger parents was too heavy-handed and made the film “less funny.”
