Navid: Why do women in Islamic countries all have to wear a headscarf? What does it mean?
Thomas: It's called a hijab. The Quran requires that women keep their body covered up. It's a sign of modesty and morality.
Navid: Do they need to wear it all the time?
Thomas: Only in the presence of unrelated men. So fathers, husbands and sons are not included in this category.
Navid: What about the long gowns? Are they also a form of hijab?
Thomas: The hijab has raised some controversy even among Muslims themselves. Some people observe a stricter form. Generally speaking, most people believe only hands and face can be exposed; the rest need to be covered up by loose gowns.
Navid: Does the same go with the turban of men?
Thomas: Not exactly. The turban is worn in imitation of Muhammad. There is a famous saying, "turbans are the crowns of Arabs" and therefore it has to do with man's honour.
