1. There was a blackout last night, so we studied by candlelight.
There be句型的過去式，表示過去存在或者發生某事，a blackout指的是“停電”，注意這里的blackout是名詞，前面可以加上冠詞a，last night昨晚，There was a blackout last night, 昨晚停電了。很多朋友應該都有過在上學期間晚自習時停電的經歷，我就記得班長曾經為班上同學臨時買來蠟燭，這樣呢我們就可以studiy by candlelight通過燭光來學習。There was a blackout last night, so we studied by candlelight. 昨晚停電了,所以我們點蠟燭學習。再來聽一句：Will there be another blackout tomorrow? 明天會再來一次停電嗎?
2. The firm is in the black for 3 years.
In the black指財政黑字，也就是收入大于支出，賬目表上通常用黑色字體來記錄盈利，所以呢“盈利，盈余”叫做in the black；那么與之相對的“負債”則是用紅字記錄的，因此叫做in the red或者in debt，也就是財政赤字，收入小于支出。The firm is in the black for 3 years. 這家公司三年來一直盈利。He moved the company into the black. 他讓公司扭虧為盈。 I am in the red this month again . 啊，這個月我又透支了。

3. It's all there in black and white.
It's all there 指“一切都在這里了”，很有畫面感，讓人想到好像有人理直氣壯地指著一堆東西，說你想看的都在這里，似乎給人一種證據確鑿的感覺。我們可以想象到面前應該是有一堆字據，白紙黑字，這就是in black and white. It's all there in black and white. 有白紙黑字為證。再來聽一個例句：I'll put everything in black and white! 我會把所有事情白紙黑字寫清楚。
