IAN: After lunch. Could you come about two o'clock?
GREG: O.K.
IAN: And would you mind bringing your ladder?I need two ladders, so would you bring yours please?
GREG: I'm afraid I can't, Ian.
IAN: Oh?
GREG: No. The ladder's broken, I'm afraid.
IAN: Oh...well...I'll use a chair.
GREG: O.K. I'll see you about two o'clock.
IAN: Thanks, Greg. See you．

1．請某人做某事
Would/Could you help me?

肯定答復

注意：
Sure，0.K.和All right這三種說法比較隨便，Certainly比較正式。
2．請某人不做某事
Would you mind not doing that?
Please don't do that．
肯定答復（如果有人要求我們不做某事，我們通常總是同意的。）
0.K．
All right.
Sure!
Certainly.
3．請求允許做某事
a) Can I come in?
Could I use your phone?
May I sit here?
表示允許
Sure．
Of course．
Certainly.
b) Do you mind if I smoke?
表示允許
Of course not．
在回答(a)和(b)的問題時，如果表示不允許，可以說：I'd rather you didn't.
注意：
Could I...比Can I...把握更小一些。
Do you mind if...這種說法比較客氣。
請求別人允許做某事，通常是要很客氣的。如果要做的事，比如吸煙，可能使人感到不快，問的時候尤其要客氣。
如果你覺得你要問的問題不大好問，或可能使人感到尷尬，就可以先說Do you mind if I ask a question?
I'd rather you didn't這個說法可能顯得有點怪，不過你大概記得第4講里說過I'd rather=I'd prefer。至于didn't，它不表示過去的動作，這里用的是虛擬語氣。

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

a) Look! 意思相當于listen to what I have to say，或What I mean is...
b) I see意思是“我明白了”，可在會話中用作答話。

第四部分：歌唱

你將在廣播里聽到兩支歌曲，一支是Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends, 一支是Don't Make Me Laugh。
