第一部分對話：學游泳

有個小男孩兒叫Tim，和父親一起在游泳池游泳。Tim是剛學，有點兒害怕。這段對話在廣播里分幾部分播放。

Dialogue 1
英語情景對話1

DAD: Come on. Tim, into the pool!
TIM: How deep is it, Dad?
DAD: It's about one metre here.
TIM: Hmm...one metre...
DAD: Come on, Tim. It's not deep!
TIM: Well...O.K..Brr! It's cold.
（爺兒倆淡到了游泳池有多寬。）
DAD: Now, can you swim across the pool?
TIM: Umm - how wide is it?
DAD: Thirty metres.
TIM: O.K, Dad, let's go!
（游完之后，Tim問了個問題。）
TIM: What's the length of the pool, Dad?
DAD: Oh - 50 metres.
TIM: Come on then, Dad!
Let's swim to the other end!
（但突然之間，Tim發生了危險！）
TIM: Dad, stop... wait... Dad! I can't touch the bottom! Dad...I Can't...touch the bottom! It's too deep!
DAD：0.K.Tim. I'm here.It's all right.
TIM: Ah! It's deep at this end, Dad! How deep is it?
DAD: It's about two metres here. Come on - let's have a rest.

1．SIZE OR DIMENSIONS OF THINGS 物體的大小或長度、寬度、高（深）度
How long is the bridge?
- (It's) 1149 metres (long).
可以用下面兩種不同的問法：
How long is the ...?
What's the length of the...?
How wide is the...?
What's the width of the...?
How high is the...?
What's the height of the...?
How deep is the...?
What's the depth of the...?
注意：
括號里的詞常可省略。
in round figures是很有用的一個短語。如果是1149米長，你可以說In round figures it's one thousand one hundred metres (long)或：In round figures it's eleven hundred metres (long).
2．HEIGHT OF PEOPLE人的高度
問句
How tall are you?
What's your height?
回答
(I'm) 170 centimetres (tall).
注意：
寫的時候往往寫成1.70m，但說的時候說170 centimetres，和中文說一米七O不同。
Height是名詞，但說人高多少，形容詞要用tall。

CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

What do you mean?用來要求對方把話說清楚些。這個說法很普通。例如：
JOHN: How tall are you, Barbara?
BARBARA: I'm 160 centimetres tall. Or sometimes I'm 165．
JOHN: Sometimes 165? What do you mean?
BARBARA: Well, sometimes I wear high-heeled shoes.Then,I'm 165 centimetres.
注意：
在這段對話里，由于前面提到centimetres，后面不必重復，可以只說165，否則165不能單用。

a)Length,depth,width等詞的斜體部分不容易發音。請再看一下Part II這三個詞的音標，并練習一下。
b)通過下面這種問句，反復練習這幾個音。
What's the length of the pool?
特別注意：
i)What's，length和pool這三個詞需要重讀。
ii)在這三個重讀詞之間保持同樣的時間間隔。
iii)連讀length of
iv)輔音之間不要停頓，例如：
what's the
of the
c)Sydney -[d]這個音不充分發出來，緊接著馬上發[ni:]。

悉尼港大橋

悉尼港大橋到1 982年已經有五十年歷史了。舉行慶祝的那一天，許多人步行過橋，其中也有澳大利亞總理在內。
這座橋每天有許多人走過，或駕車經過，從橋北自己的家里來到橋南市區工作。
這座橋的拱跨長度在全世界的大橋中占第二位。
