在外事接待活動中，譯員首先面臨的一道難題是稱謂的口譯。稱謂代表了一個人的職位、職銜或?qū)W銜，體現(xiàn)了一個人的資歷和地位。稱謂的誤譯不僅是對有關(guān)人員的不尊重，而且也會產(chǎn)生種種不良的后果。稱謂的準(zhǔn)確翻譯其關(guān)鍵在于譯員對有關(guān)人員的身份及其稱謂的表達(dá)是否有一個正確的理解，尤其是對稱謂語的認(rèn)識。一種稱謂語很可能表示多種身份，例如，英語的頭銜語 president，譯成漢語時可視具體情況分別譯作共和國的總統(tǒng)、國家主席、大學(xué)的校長、學(xué)院的院長、學(xué)會或協(xié)會的會長或主席、公司的總裁或董事長等等。
一般說來，各類機構(gòu)或組織的首長其漢語稱謂譯成英語時雖可套用通用詞 head，但從比較嚴(yán)格的意義上看，應(yīng)使用特定的、規(guī)范的稱謂語。例如：
校長（大學(xué)） President of Beijing University
校長（中小學(xué)） Principal /Headmaster of Donghai Middle School
院長（大學(xué)下屬） Dean of the Graduate School
系主任（大學(xué)學(xué)院下屬） Chair/Chairman of the English Department
會長／主席（學(xué)／協(xié)會） President of the Student Union, Shanghai University
廠長（企業(yè)） Director of the Machine Tools Manufacturing Plant
院長（醫(yī)院） President of Huadong Hospital
主任（中心） Director of the Business Center
主任（行政） Director of Foreign Affairs Office
董事長（企業(yè)） President／Chairman of the Board of Directors
董事長（學(xué)校） President／Chairman of the Board of Trustees
首席長官的漢語稱謂常以“總……”表示，而表示首席長官的英語稱謂語則常帶有 chief general, head , managing 這類詞，因此當(dāng)翻譯冠以“總”字的頭銜時，需遵循英語頭銜的表達(dá)習(xí)慣：

有些部門或機構(gòu)的首長或主管的英譯，可以用一些通用的頭銜詞表示，例如下列機構(gòu)的負(fù)責(zé)人可以用 director, head 或 chief 來表示：

署（省屬）office（行署為administrative office）
局 bureau
所 institute
處 division
科 section
股 section
室 office
教研室 program / section
例：
局長 director of the bureau; head of the bureau; bureau chief。
國務(wù)院 the State Council 屬下的部為 ministry，所以部長叫作 minister。
另外，公署專員叫作commissioner，其辦事機構(gòu)叫作“專員公署”，英語為 prefectural commissioner's office。
漢語中表示副職的頭銜一般都冠以“副”字，英譯時需視詞語的固定搭配或表達(dá)習(xí)慣等情況，可選擇 vice, associate, assistant, deputy 等詞。相對而言，vice 使用面較廣，例如：
副總統(tǒng)（或大學(xué)副校長等）vice president
副主席（或系副主任等）vice chairman
副總理 vice premier
副部長 vice minister
副省長 vice governor
副市長 vice mayor
副領(lǐng)事 vice consul
副校長（中小學(xué)）vice principal
行政職務(wù)的副職頭銜與學(xué)術(shù)頭銜的“副”職稱往往用不同的詞表達(dá)，最為常用的英語詞是 associate，例如：
副教授 associate professor
副研究員 associate research fellow
副主編 associate managing editor
副編審 associate senior editor
副審判長 associate judge
副研究館員 associate research fellow of ... (e.g. library science)
副譯審 associate senior translator
副主任醫(yī)師 associate senior doctor
當(dāng)然，有些英語職位頭銜，如 manager 和 headmaster，其副職頭銜可冠以 assistant，例如：
副總經(jīng)理 assistant / deputy general manager; assistant / deputy managing director
大堂副理（賓館）assistant manager
副校長（中小學(xué)）assistant headmaster
以 director 表示的職位的副職常以 deputy director 表示。此外，secretary, mayor, dean 等頭銜的副職也可冠以 deputy，例如：
副秘書長 deputy secretary-general
耐書記 deputy secretary
副市長 deputy mayor
副院長 deputy dean
