As spring heralds a fresh start, we could not find a better time to launch the new Chinese website of the United Nations. On behalf of the Chinese government, let me say “congratulations”!
在萬物復蘇、充滿希望的羊年春天里，聯合國中文網站正式改版升級！我代表中國政府表示熱烈祝賀。
Chinese is one of the oldest languages in the world. The Chinese characters, which were said to be created by the legendary Cang Jie, are an important part of the shared cultural root of Chinese people. From oracle bone inscriptions to simplified Chinese characters, the language has evolved along with the Chinese nation. In this sense, the history of the Chinese language is an epitome of the Chinese civilization.
中文是世界上最古老的文字之一。傳說中的倉頡造字讓中國人有了共同的根。從甲骨文到簡體漢字，中文伴隨中華民族綿延至今。可以說，一部中文史，就是一部中華文明史。
The Chinese language has shaped the mind and character of the Chinese nation. The strokes come in different shapes and they are well structured to form balanced characters. In a small way, this reflects the Chinese preference for modesty, accommodation and win-win results.
中文鑄造了中華民族的精神品格。比如說，中文書寫各筆每畫都要伸縮有度，相互映襯，取長補短，以使整個字渾然一體。這體現了中國人謙讓包容、合作共贏的處事風格。
The Chinese language is the product of philosophical thinking. The way a character is structured carries deep meaning. For example, the character xin, meaning trust, is made up of two parts, which stand for “man” and “word” respectively. This tells you that trust means a man should keep his word. This is the principle that guides the inter-personal relations of every individual Chinese, and the way through which China manages its relations with other countries.
中文富有哲理，很多字由意生字，寓意豐富。中文的“信”字由“人”和“言”組成，意思就是“人要言而有信”。這是中國人的做人原則，也是中國與世界各國的相處之道。
The beauty and simplicity of the Chinese language is widely recognized in the world. The characters can be traced back to the ancient pictograph, which were literally drawings of things. Today, the writing of Chinese characters, known as calligraphy, has become an art of drawing. One can hardly think of any other language with the same cultural depth.
中文的優美、簡練舉世公認。中文是從象形字演變而來，從按圖寫字到以字為畫，逐步發展成一種可以欣賞的書寫藝術。這在世界上是獨特的。
The Chinese language has been with the UN since the day of its founding. China was one of the four sponsoring countries of the San Francisco Conference and the first signature on the UN Charter was written in Chinese with Chinese ink brush. The Chinese character he has rich connotations such as peace, reconciliation, harmony and amity, all of which are encapsulated in the spirit of the UN Charter.
中文同聯合國有著深厚淵源。中國是舊金山制憲會議的四大發起國之一，《聯合國憲章》上簽署的第一個名字是用毛筆揮就的中文。中文的“和”字就包括“和平”、“和解”、“和諧”“和睦”等多種含義，這都是《聯合國憲章》的重要精神。
At the founding of the UN, Chinese was established as one of its official languages. At the end of 1973, Chinese became one of the working languages of the UN. In 2010, the UN designated the day of guyu, one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendar, as Chinese Language Day. It speaks to the weight and importance of the Chinese language in world civilization. It also shows how much the UN values and respects Chinese civilization. We welcome and support the important decision.
早在聯合國成立之初，中文就被確定為聯合國官方語言之一。1973年底，中文被列為聯合國工作語言之一。2010年，聯合國將中國農歷二十四節氣的“谷雨”定為中文日。這既反映出中文在世界文明中的份量和地位，也體現了聯合國對中華文明的重視和尊重。我們對此表示歡迎和支持。

In November 1998, the UN officially launched its Chinese website, which builds a bridge and a new platform for communication and interaction between the UN and Chinese people. This website has always been in the “favorites” folder of my computer whether I work in Beijing, Lusaka,Geneva or New York. Five years ago, the UN launched its official Chinese microblog, and I have been following it ever since. Two years ago, I added the official UN account to my “WeChat” app, which attracts me to browse news with my mobile phone more often every day. In China, there are many people like me who like and follow the UN website in Chinese.
1998年11月，聯合國正式開通中文網站，為聯合國與中國人民溝通互動架起了一座橋梁，提供了新的平臺。無論我在北京、盧薩卡、日內瓦還是紐約工作，聯合國中文網站一直在我的電腦“收藏夾”里。5年前，聯合國開通中文官方微博，我一直是它的“粉絲”。兩年前，我通過手機微信添加了聯合國的公共微信號，也極大增加了我每天瀏覽手機的頻率。在中國，像我這樣關注和喜愛聯合國中文網站的人還有很多。
The world today has seen a “Chinese language fever”, while China is experiencing a “UN fever”. The Chinese website, which happens to capture both trends, will only become more popular and attract more clicks. It will bring the voice of the UN to millions of Chinese households, garner more support for the UN’s call for peace and development, and cement China’s relationship with the UN.
當今世界正掀起“中文熱”，中國亦不斷掀起“聯合國熱”。只要用心去做，兼得上述兩大優勢的聯合國中文網站必將越辦越火，點擊率越來越高，讓聯合國聲音走進中國千家萬戶，讓聯合國倡導的和平與發展的理念更加深入人心，讓中國同聯合國的友誼不斷鞏固加強。
Having said that, the Chinese website still has room for improvement. I sincerely hope and believe that the UN will fully implement the resolution of the General Assembly on the equal use of the six official languages, increase human and financial input, and refine and enrich this website, so as to present a full, real and dynamic picture of the UN to the Chinese people and Chinese readers around the globe, and inject new vitality into the communication and cooperation between China and the UN.
也要看到，聯合國中文網站仍有繼續改進的空間。在此，我衷心希望并相信，聯合國將進一步落實聯大關于促進六大官方語言平等使用的決議，加強人力和資金保障，持續不斷完善、豐富聯合國中文網站，向中國人民和全球中文閱讀者呈現一個全面、真實、精彩的聯合國，為中國同聯合國的交流合作注入源源不斷的新活力。

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN and of the end of the World Anti-Fascist War and the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
今年是聯合國成立70周年，也是世界反法西斯戰爭和中國人民抗日戰爭勝利70周年。
Over the last 70 years, as the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental international organization, the UN has played an indispensable role and made tremendous achievements in promoting progress across the world.
70年來，作為最具普遍性、代表性和權威性的政府間國際組織，聯合國為促進人類進步事業發揮著不可替代的作用，并取得了巨大成就。
Over the last 70 years, the trend of peace, development and cooperation has gained increasing support. Yet, the international community still faces a myriad of new challenges and difficulties. There is still a long way to go before we can realize world peace and common development. Over the last 70 years, the international community’s expectation on the UN and the responsibilities entrusted with the UN have both been growing. Therefore, the UN’s role must be strengthened, not weakened, and its authority must be upheld, not undermined.
70年來，和平、發展、合作的時代潮流更加深入人心。同時，國際社會面臨諸多新挑戰、新難題，維護世界和平、促進共同發展依然有很長路要走。70年來，國際社會對聯合國的期待在不斷上升，聯合國肩負的責任也更加艱巨。聯合國的作用只能加強而不能削弱，聯合國的權威必須維護而不能損害。
We hope that all sides will take the 70th anniversary commemoration as an opportunity to reflect on the past and look into the future. Let us uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, maintain the authority and role of the UN, and give full play to its positive role in managing issues crucial to world peace and development.
我們希望各方以紀念聯合國成立70周年為契機，回顧歷史，展望未來，堅持《聯合國憲章》宗旨和原則，維護聯合國的權威和作用，推動聯合國在事關人類和平與發展的一系列重大問題上繼續發揮積極作用。
