Welcome to the international seminar of chinese and its character system. It’s my great pleasure and privilege to have invited so many Sinologists and chinese enthusiasts from all over the world. The next three weeks will see us engaged in intensive and constructive studies and exchanges of opinions.

我們很高興地看到近年來(lái)世界各地學(xué)漢語(yǔ)者與日俱增。對(duì)于這門(mén)世界上使用人數(shù)最多，文學(xué)歷史最悠久的語(yǔ)言來(lái)說(shuō)，這股學(xué)習(xí)熱潮早該出現(xiàn)了。

We are glad to see that a world-wide interest in chinese is increasing in an accelerated tempo. Considering that chinese has the largest number of speaker in the world and the greatest time gap in its literature, this interest is long overdue.

從某種意義上說(shuō)，漢語(yǔ)是一種很古老的語(yǔ)言。其最早的漢字已有近4000年的歷史了。漢字在其漫長(zhǎng)的發(fā)展史中演化出不同的書(shū)寫(xiě)形式，例如篆書(shū)，隸書(shū)，楷書(shū)和行書(shū)。中國(guó)書(shū)法家筆中的漢字往往以字形的夸張取得藝術(shù)效果，例如旅游勝地的一些石刻碑文。中國(guó)書(shū)法是一門(mén)研究藝術(shù)，隨著各位學(xué)習(xí)興趣的提高，我將適時(shí)介紹中國(guó)書(shū)法的流派以及如何欣賞中國(guó)書(shū)法的藝術(shù)性。

In a sense, chinese is a very old language and its earliest characters date back to nearly 4000 years. During their long history of development, chinese characters have evolved into many different script forms , such as seal character, official script, regular script and running script. Chines ecalligrafers usually render their chinese characters in a way that is exaggerated in form to yield artistic beauty, such as those in stone scriptions seen in torist resorts. Chines calligraphy is a subject of artistic study. As your interest in chinese calligraphy is increasing in the days to come, I will discuss in due time the different schools of chinese calligraphy and how to appreciate the artistic beauty of chinese calligraphy.
