downpour-durable No drudgery in the ditches
水溝里干活不覺(jué)累
Sam was dredging the drainage ditch behind the town dump
山姆正在鎮(zhèn)垃圾場(chǎng)后面 疏浚排水溝
when the downpour began.
開(kāi)始下傾盆大雨時(shí).
There were only a couple of small droplets at first,
起初只有幾滴小雨,
but then the rain really began to fall.
不久就真的下大了.
He smiled as he hoped that the drought would now be over-
他笑了,因?yàn)樗Ｍ?災(zāi)會(huì)就此結(jié)束-
-they were long due for some rain.
-早就該下點(diǎn)兒雨了.
He put down his shovel and drill
他放下鐵鍬和鉆頭,
and happily escaped the drudgery of his work to the shed on the hill.
很高興能到山上避雨處 逃避他那單調(diào)乏味的工 作.
Inside he shut the door and sat down to relax.
一到里面他就把門關(guān)上 坐下來(lái)休息.
Not paying attention to the draft coming in through the walls
山姆沒(méi)有注意到從墻 縫吹進(jìn)來(lái)的風(fēng),
Sam's thoughts began to drift.
他的思緒開(kāi)始漂浮起來(lái)
It was a dubious job,cleaning ditches,
疏通水溝的工作是讓 人懷疑,
but he had accepted the dramatic change in lifestyle quite easily.
但他還是很輕松地接受 了生活方式的突然變化
He had never been happy in the corporate world.
在公司里他從來(lái)沒(méi) 有開(kāi)心過(guò).
And he had taken the loss of his job
他失去了工作
because of downsizing quite hard at first.
由于實(shí)行機(jī)構(gòu)精簡(jiǎn), 一開(kāi)始他還接受不了,
But then he had accepted the downturn
但是后來(lái)他接受了這 種下降趨勢(shì),
to see what life still had to offer.
他想看看生活還會(huì)給 他些什么.
When he found his current job,his family dubbed him lost forever.
找到現(xiàn)在這份工作時(shí), 全家人都稱他是徹底 完蛋了.
They had thought he would be able to find a duplicate job in another company,
他們?cè)詾樗麜?huì)在另一 家公司找到一份和以前 完全一樣的工作,
but that thought was dreadful for Sam
但這種想法對(duì)于山姆來(lái) 說(shuō)太可怕了,
and he knew that he wouldn't have been durable enough
因?yàn)樗浪豢赡?有足夠的耐力
to be happy again in business.
在商界重新找到快樂(lè).
Now,Sam was quite happy.
現(xiàn)在山姆很幸福.
It was a drastic change,sure,
沒(méi)錯(cuò),變化是大了點(diǎn)兒
moving from a nice office in a tall building
從在高樓大廈辦公
to always working in fields and ditches,
變?yōu)榭偸窃谔镆昂?水溝里工作,
but Sam quite liked being outside and he was happy.
但山姆很喜歡在外面工 作,他因此而感到快樂(lè)
When the rain stopped Sam peacefully stepped out of the shed
雨停了,山姆平靜地走 出避雨處
and went back to work.
回去工作.
The air was fresh and he regretted nothing.
空氣很清新, 他一點(diǎn)兒也不后悔.
