The most important day I remember is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. It was 3 March 1887, three months before I was seven years old.
我一生中最重要的一天，是老師安妮·莎莉文來到我家的這一天。是1887年3月3日，還有三個月我滿七歲。
I had guessed that something unusual was about to happen, so I went to the door and waited. I soon felt approaching footsteps.

I stretched out my hand. Someone took it, and I was held close in the arms of her who had come to reveal all things to me, and, more than anything else, to love me.

The next morning, my teacher gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word d-o-l-l.
第二天早晨，莎莉文老師給了我一個洋娃娃。我玩了一會兒洋娃娃，莎莉文小姐在我的手掌上慢慢地拼寫“d-o-l-l”這個詞。
I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it.
我對手指游戲產生了興趣，并且模仿在她手上畫。
I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation.
我并不知道這就是在寫字，甚至也不知道世界上有文字這種東西。我不過是依樣畫葫蘆模仿莎莉文老師的動作而已。
My teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a name.
世間萬物都有自己的名字，是在老師教了我幾個星期以后，我才領悟到的。
One day, while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan put my big rag doll into my lap also, spelled d-o-l-l and tried to make me understand that d-o-l-l applied to both.
有一天，莎莉文小姐給我一個更大的新洋娃娃，同時也把原來那個布娃娃拿來放在我的膝上，然后在我手上拼寫“d-o-l-l”這個詞，用意在于告訴我這個大的布娃娃和小布娃娃一樣都叫做“d-o-l-l”。
Earlier in the day we had had an argument over the words m-u-g and w-a-t-e-r—I persisted in confusing the two. She had dropped the subject, only to renew it now.
這天上午，我和莎莉文老師為“杯”和“水”這兩個字發生了爭執。我把兩者混為一談，她只好暫時丟開這個問題，重新練習布娃娃“DOLL”這個詞。
I became impatient and, seizing the new doll, I threw it upon the floor. I was delighted when I felt the fragments of the broken doll at my feet.
我有些不耐煩了，抓起新洋娃娃就往地上摔，把它摔碎了，心中覺得特別痛快。
Neither sorrow nor regret followed my outburst.
發這種脾氣，我既不慚愧，也不悔恨。
