Today I saw the ancient Roman city of Pompeii as it was 2,000 years ago. How amazing!
今天，我親眼看到了2000年前保存下來的古羅馬城市--龐貝。真是令人稱奇啊！
The city was forgotten for many years until the 18th century when a farmer discovered a stone with writing on it.
這座城市被世人遺忘了很多年，直到18世紀(jì)，有一個農(nóng)夫偶然發(fā)現(xiàn)了一塊寫著文字的石頭。
People started to dig in the area for treasure, which caused much damage.
結(jié)果，人們就開始在這個地區(qū)挖掘金銀財寶，對遺址造成了很大的破壞。
Thus, in 1860, the area was put under government protection so it could be preserved and studied.
因此，1860年，由政府保護(hù)該片區(qū)域，這樣它就可以被保存、學(xué)習(xí)。
When I walked around the city, I saw streets just as they had been,
走在古城中，我看到原樣保存下來的街道，
with stepping stones along the road so you did not have to step in the mud on rainy days!
上面鋪滿了踏腳石，這樣，每逢下雨天行人就可以不用踩著泥巴了！
I saw several houses which were decorated with wall paintings.
我看了好幾間墻上繪有壁畫的房子。
I also saw the people who had been buried alive.
我還看到了許多被活埋的人。后變成了化石的死難者尸體-他們在2000年前的樣子被原封不動地保存了下來。
It turns out that after the ash covered the people who failed to flee the city, their bodies nearly completely broke down and disappeared, leaving empty spaces in the ash.
原來，火山灰覆蓋了沒能逃離城市的人，他們的身體幾乎全部燒化消失了，只留下火山灰里的人形空當(dāng)。
