從理論上說，兩者都可用作名詞或副詞。表示“其間”、“與此同時”，以下四種表達均可以且可互換：meantime, meanwhile, in the meantime, in the meanwhile。如：
他去倫敦一個星期，在此期間她繼續工作。
正：He was in London for a week, and meantime [meanwhile] she went on with the work.
正：He was in London for a week, and in the meantime [in the mean-while] she went on with the work.
但在現代英語中用得較多的是 in the meantime 和 meanwhile。
I will call you Sunday, but in the meantime say nothing. 我星期天給你打電話，但在此期間你什么也不要說。
The train won’t leave for an hour. Meanwhile we can have lunch. 火車還有一個小時才開，其間我們可以吃中飯。
