In 1612, one of the world's greatest love stories began when Mumtaz Mahal, an Islamic Persian princess married Shah Jahan, known as Prince Khurram before he became the 5th Mughal emperor in 1628. Although Mumtaz was just one of Shah Jahan's wives, she was considered his ultimate love match. Mumtaz accompanied her husband throughout his travels and military expeditions, and was his most trusted political adviser.

However, as with any famous love story in history, tragedy lurked in their future. In 1631, Mumtaz died while giving birth to her 14th child. It is said that the death of Mumtaz made the emperor so sad that his black hair and beard turned white. In memory of his beloved wife, he decided to build her a monument of eternal love. Because Mumtaz had endeared herself to the people with her kindness, the emperor's subjects were inspired to help build the spectacular monument.
