The hippies freedthemselves from social restrictions, rejected middle-class values and theteachings of earlier generations. They sought to find new meaning in lifethrough creating a culture of their own. “Peace, love, and understanding” isone of the slogans popularized by the hippies.

The hippies expressedtheir love of freedom and nature through their appearance. They often had longhair and beards, wore bright-colored jeans and ethnic clothes, particularlyfrom India and the Far East. And their clothes were usually handmade andcomposed of natural materials. Men and women often also wore similar styles toreflect their strong belief in sexual equality.
