Around the year 1900, a small, dark-haired boy was often seen waiting outside the back entrances of London theaters. He looked thin and hungry, but his blue eyes were determined. Despite his hard childhood, the boy knew how to make people laugh. He could sing and dance and was hoping to make a living in show business.
1900年前后，人們經(jīng)常看到一個(gè)個(gè)子矮小的黑發(fā)男孩在倫敦各大劇院的后門外等候。他看上去又瘦又餓，但他那雙藍(lán)色的眼睛卻透著堅(jiān)定。盡管他的童年很艱苦，但這個(gè)男孩知道如何逗別人笑。他能歌善舞，并希望在演藝界謀生。
When he couldn’t get work, the boy wandered about the city streets like a tramp. He found food and shelter wherever he could. Sometimes he was sent away to an orphanage—a home for children who have no parents. He was cold and miserable there and was often scolded and punished for the smallest mistake. He hated it.

Thirty years later he was very popular. Everyone wanted to meet him. He had become almost a royal figure in the bright new world of the cinema—Charlie Chaplin, the king of comedy.

Chaplin’s life was an adventure. He was born in London, England, in 1889, to parents who were both music-hall performers. His father’s death from drinking too much and his mother’s illness left him in poverty for most of his childhood. However, Chaplin didn’t get lost in the poverty. In fact, he had set a goal for himself at a young age: to become the most famous person in the world.
卓別林的一生是一場(chǎng)冒險(xiǎn)。1889年，他出生于英國(guó)倫敦，父母皆是音樂廳演員。父親酗酒去世，母親患有疾病，這讓卓別林大部分的童年時(shí)光貧苦不堪。然而，卓別林并沒有在貧困中迷失。事實(shí)上，年幼的他已為自己定下了目標(biāo)：成為世界上最出名的人。
